    Pre-Season Training - When should it start?

    [QUOTE=BIGSHOW;467167]Hey Big Show, serious question, what have the numbers been like at preseason, as presuming you would have started by now?

        Wow, I would guess most Clubs start prior to Xmas.

        In my opinion, I say that you guys are starting late for 3 reasons:
        1) I believe starting pre xmas is what should happen at all Clubs that are serious about performance. This allows you to get 8-12 sessions in and gives you a higher base to start at post New Year. Starting mid Jan means you are not at a high fitness level until 8-12 weeks later (that is near start of season, too late for mine), and don't tell me all players look after themselves in Sydney over the off season.

        2) as a PL Club I would expect you to start prior to Xmas.

        3) it is not as though Dockers can rest on their laurels. I am not trying to have the usual kick in the guts at Dockers here, but if my Club came bottom of table I would be expecting them to work their ring out for the next year!

        I suppose to put it in context, I would expect most Clubs have started already:
        * Eagles start December 1st - and they have had less time away from the track than Dockers (ie finished season 19th Sept compared to 22nd August) AND they won the comp so could argue they need less hard yards to start the 2010 season.
        * Sydney Uni started 16th November
        * St George started 12th November
        * Wests start 19th November
        * Lions start 1st December
        * I know in lower divisions, my club, Mac Uni start 24th November and Jets have started already a couple of weeks back as previously mentioned on this site. Not sure about everyone else.

          i wouldnt read too much into not starting before christmas.
          most blokes will piss it up against the wall anyway unless they keep doing some sort of running over the 4-5 weeks off.
          uts dont usually start until after chrissy they dont seem to go to badly.

            that a great point mahatma made earlier. most blokes will piss it up through the festive season...so starting earlier means very little.. hows pre season down at a 3rd division club pekay?

              Agree with the comments about preseason training from a fitness view..... but in my experience when you start preseason it is often about sending messages to current, past and perspecitive players about where the club is going. This is particulary important for clubs wanting to improve on their previous season performance (Balmain). UTS are an exception to the rule as they do need to send messages to anyone other than a house full sign for new players.

                [QUOTE=Tom Wills;467278]sending messages

                and here is where I agree with you Tom.

                Plus, while I see where you are coming from Mahatma, you (knowing your working role) would have to agree that it is better to do pre xmas and raise your base, allowing for shandy's over xmas period, then to drop further leading into xmas with no training and start froma lower base post xmas....

                  As mentioned above i to believe that pre xmas training is more of a social number building excercise,then post xmas you have 12weeks of road runs and trial games to build up skills and core fitness.Being over 30 the extra couple of weeks off the paddock(with carbo loading) is really appreciated also keeps the family happy as well.

                    anyone that wants to play at the higher level will be doing their own stuff anyway. i used to think yeah get a base up but the break is too long and if you cant get fit enough to have a run around from the end of jan to apr your not trying real hard.

                      We have done a full pre-season since the end of 04 (Back then, it was more about knowing who we had left) and last year we did a pretty intense 2 month block up to Xmas and started with the same about a week left in January. We are moving back to Division 2 this year so know we need a boost in fitness, so we've started pretty early, however Bully has us doing alot of ballwork, which can easily disguise a heap of running at the same time. Those that start after Xmas are left to fend for themselves.

                        def right. get the boys together and have a few runs and a few froffies to boost moral, give them a month program for over xmas and back 3rd tues in jan gives you plenty of time to get serious. i know a coach who has won 4 Premier Div flags on that recipe, you dont want to peak to early
                        The edge is not the limit, It's just the starting point...

                          Pre-Season Training-When should it start?

                          Have always wondered why Sydney footy clubs started pre-season so early. We surmised at the Goannas that the earlier we started the better chance we gave ourselves to pick up interstate recruits or locals who wanted a change. Over here in WA, my club North Beach who has won the last 6 straight A Grade Amateurs Flags, and 9 out of the last 11, always start pre-season in early February around 10 weeks before Round 1. The Senior Coach, Billy Duckworth, obviously has the formula right!!

                              That's the only benefit I can really see. If you start a month after everyone else then new blokes to Sydney, keen to get settled and meet some new people etc, could have well started training with someone else and by then it is often too late.

                              I guess it doesn't hurt but the big downside is that a Nov start (ridiculous IMO for Sydney) makes the season seem like it goes on forever which can be a huge drain on your volunteers.
