Pathways for sydney juniours

I agree with you - I wasn't meaning to come across as short-sighted, I think it is a great opportunity for SU to work with a couple of junior clubs and help them become bigger and better as the years progress. Perhaps I was trying to say that SU are obviously going to be affected by the new rules brought in by the AFL - who then in their wisdom aligned Uni to a club that has kids who are up to ten years away from being able to participate. How does that help in the meantime? Obviously the established clubs such as your St George, NS etc. have nurtured their relationships with the local junior clubs (and leagues) over many years and deserve to have the opportunity to benefit from that, but SU can't make junior clubs pop up out of the ground - especially in the inner city.
Also agree on the private schools - it is a great opportunity.
Your points re Moore Park and Newtown are very short-sightred as they WILL be a feeder club soon if you keep their development going. Surely the goal of this pathway thingy.....
The cut-off age for U18s is Jan 1 not when the season starts so it is not redundant but it is limited.
Re the private schools it staggers me that all the Melbourne GPS schools have always played rugby but since the Swans came up in 1982 only ONE private school has added AFL to it's school sport (Riverview, for over 20 years). Absolutely ridiculous when you consider that many of the landed gentry that board are from AFL heartland areas such as the Riverina (9th generation boarder at Joeys and proud of it yadadadadada) So, yes, a hard nut to crack but surely the incentive is there now for Sydney Uni to get in there with all their contacts and unlock this talent stream because no-one else has been able to do it. I actually wonder how hard it has been attempted before tbh but surely it is worth a good effort?

No, I hadn't really looked at that. It would be fair to say that the demographics of the South West are a little different to the inner city though (ie. there would probably be a higher number of youngsters), I guess the challenge is attracting kids to play footy instead of soccer and league. Hopefully GWS will bring the game to a wider audience and clubs like yours will really benefit from increased participant numbers.

Mugpunter- Dont know who exactly you are but unless you have the corect information regarding Mac UNI then please refrain from tossing stuff around half baked. MaC uni under 18s came about because there were about 20 kids a year from Westbrook that Penno did not want as they were not brilliant footballers so the commitees from both clubs got together and put a PATHWAY for those players to keep them playing football. This year the new presidents of both senior clubs penno and mac uni discussed the pathway of running a team each to fit into the new AFL pathway scheme that has been adopted. They came up with the publicised announcment and will now form two teams one in each division. On doing this it now gives all the kids in the catchment a chance to continue their adult football carreers and enjoying playing football at a level that suits them but also in a competitve arena. The PAthway the AFL has put in place will take time to manage but at the end of the day this whole things is to keep kids playing and not walking away from this great game. MAC UNI's whole philospy across the entire club is anyone is welcome to come down and play football enjoy the environment put down by fantastic past committees and if there is one or two beniefits from playing with them as a club so beit. Pennant Hills and MAC UNI will work to give all players acorss all grades from any walk of life a chance to play football. The resources will then feed back into local clubs and schools as well as we need to keep building environments for kids to play for the success of all grades in the sydney leagues no matter what division you play.
So please if you do not mind MAC UNI and PENNANT HILLS AFC's will keep marching on and providing a pathway for all players to have a game, as after all isn't that what it is just a game. Sorry for the rant but someone needs to be told straight up. MAC UNI has no hidden agendas it just wants kids to play footy and succeed in the market as a respectable club that peole are proud to pull the jumper on for.Comment

Currently we do not have and have never paid players to come to us, we do have an ability to offer University incentives but they have have got to be talented footballers to recieve these. We do have other benefits as per our rego fees that the players recieve and some take the opportunity to do so. We also have i beleive now one of the best playing all season surfaces and the Uni grounds team have to take a massive pat on tne back as the time and money put into the transforming this is now paying dividends and i know our coaches and players look forward to playing on this in 2010.
Some more news is we have just joined forces with the "GO foundation" to raise oney and have some special things planned for next year and years to come and again our players will benefit from these. So thanks to all I do not mean to upset anyone but we are and I am especially pretty proud of the club and the resources we have to maintain the credability we have in the community.Comment

Correct. I am passionate about footy in general and will always do my bit to keep kids playing. I was also the president of Westbrook and put the deal to get MAC Uni into the under18s competetion. We as a club are proud of our club and we look forward to playing football across all divisions. We are now working closely with PH in the region to build local kids into footballers and to hopefully keep them between the 2 clubs and not be lost to other clubs that have money to pay players.

It's interesting looking at the Unis as you really can't lump then together.
UTS are a real expat inner city club with no real interest in junior development as far as I know
Mac Uni's U18s are really a JV with Westbrook and fit very nicely into the pathway model as they traditionally have decent relationship with Penno (not sure how this will be affected when Eynaud starts trying to raid the Kookas' best players though).
UNSW just inherited the old juniors of Easts and have a clear geographical junior zone so are really no different from a district club but have a huge potential advantage in also having a Uni zone
Sydney Uni's model is well known.....
All four quite different.....Comment

Also, am sure the relationship will be fine in regards that Kev is a ex-Mac Uni and DK is an ex-Penno who would ensure best interests of both clubs are at front of mindComment

[QUOTE=Mug Punter;469638]Crikey, who haven't I offended
Balmain and Wests are traditionally (before ECE in recent years at least) the clubs that paid their players the most, and were also short of juniors, so hence my generalisation. Maybe not totally accurate but I stand by the fact that those clubs are the ones that tend to "buy results" rather than develop their clubs the right way. Look at their recent histories if you need any evidence./QUOTE]
[QUOTE=Junkyard Dog] Last thing we need is to have 16 year olds being poached by ECE, Wests and Balmain for an extra $20 a week.....
/QUOTE]
I see a lot of comments on this board regarding player payments and have tried to find evidence (such as club websites/annual reports) of this but come up with nothing. Now I understand that at times, payments can be made without reporting (as a club I was involved with in the 80's used to) but I would think that in this day and age of audited accounts, GST reporting etc it would be hard to cover up all payments.
Can you guys let me know where you find out what clubs are paying. I would hate to think that the figures thrown around on this forum are simply innuendo.
Is there a register that keeps a record of player payments. Seeing as though all Sydney Clubs are incorporated bodies of he AFL, shouldnt there be an audited record of all payments.
Also, what is the policy on paying under 18 players as suggested by JY DOG. I would be surprised if any clubs had a policy of paying under 18's... but I am sure the learned guys on this board will have the proof.Comment

Just a clarification Sam, I think it may have been assumed that I said that 16 year olds being poached by ECE, Wests and Balmain for an extra $20 a week..... I actually cut that quote off another post to prove a point. I would doubt that any club would be paying their under 18s. I know ECE and the Universities have scholorships, but I dont think that is the same thing. In regards to player payments, I think you will find most clubs include coaching, football related gear, courses for coaches and other related football payments to try and hide what they are actually paying their players. It gives clubs with high expendature an excuse to say that includes coaches, balls, gear etc etc.Comment

The league sends out a report every year of club expenditure with every club listed, but not by name. It is broken up into Premier/Div 1 and Div 2-4. Spreadsheet includes an area for coach and player payment. Would suggest if you want to see it, to contact your clubs finance person.Comment

NSpy hows the new job?
You're crafty rolly poly old devil. As you know all clubs don't publish financial reports for all too see. you have to be a member of the club & ask for them don't you. You should have remembered this being in the financial game
BTW l see the the old fat controller at ECE has left.
This is one guy who is a true genius hiding all the payments from the ATO for many years. The Hills Eagles should have a statue of him installed at BPO
NSpy your memory must be gone as you have forgotten about the payments to the 18y olds at EC this year????
May your new partner have big long hands.
PS. remember that same sex partnerships are legal in the ACT
