I don't understand comments like this.

I have my concerns about expansion into NSW, but in the end I'm just a bloke behind a computer who supports the Swans.

The AFL aren't going to thrust themselves further into the Sydney market unless they have done their homework.
    That's it in a nutshell.

They are more aware than anyone of the dangers and issues which this push faces, and they are full steam ahead.
Maybe, there is a real need for a second team.

we could look back through these forum pages and find loads of posts from years ago re: a truely national competition.

regardless of what happend to the push into NSW, and how that all turns out, I don't see any major downside for the Swans
Or at least, the potential positives far outweigh the negatives.

I say let's go for it and steal some more marketplace from the other forms of football.

To the contrary everything they have done so far re team GWS and the rubbish coming out of sheedy's gob idicates to me that they lnow absolutely NOTHING about the SYdney market.

The new teams out of Auburn and one out of Maroubra, whilst good, merely represent some repair to the damage that has been inflicted on the game here due to the AFL's neglect over the last 20 years.

I won't bother with debating your other points because noone puts it better than someone that knows muuch more about this issue than either os us, Richard Colless...

Colless: "I think it's big enough for two teams brilliantly run, providing it's understood that if the second team falters, it will undermine the first team."

and the massive amount of work that has gone into the last 30 years to get the Swans where they are today.

The "swans" (be it coaches or management), every time you mention the Blacktown Bogans, get a blank look on their collective faces and say, "it's great for AFL." Me thinks they're just saying that. It's not going to be great for us. Do we still get concessions for higher cost of living expenses? What will happen to those?

I'm dead-set against a second team in Sydney. They're barking up the wrong tree. The AFL are not going to get the support from western Sydney. Everyone who IS supporting AFL in Sydney is supporting the Swans. Can't see my Hawthorn loving friend move over to the Bogans.

If there's one thing that will stop the north and south of Tasmania hating each other - it'll be their very own footy team. Split 11 home games between Launceston AND Hobart - make everyone happy.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Wouldnt expect anything less of you Annie - please leave your narrow mind on the main board - In the long run people in Sydney will relate to GWS better than a team that was transplanted from the heart of Melbourne - How long were you the whipping boys of the Comp? I still remember getting free admittance to the SCG because I clipped a red and white St George bank pen to the front of my Carlton jumper - all I needed was to be wearing red how much didnt matter. Watch out for GWS when they start winning, regardless of how long it takes - you and the rest of your Latte sipping elitist in city grotto dwellers know better than anyone just how much Sydneysiders love a band wagon.

Please feel free to elaborate on this point in bold? Last time I checked, I only go to Swans games to barrack for the opposition.

Well maybe if people like Annie who I have met actually were a little more open minded and didnt continually refer to everyone out west as in derogatory terms my response wouldnt have offended you.

Couldn't agree with you more Annie. You are welcome on this board as often as you like

Whilst GWS may get some people like tara that will choose them over the Swans for social/political reasons (not he is most definitely NOT a Swans fan - he'd probably quite like to see us fall over) the vast majority of Swans fans will not be swapping camps. Also, the way they and their peanut head coach are going about it there will be little goodwill towards team GWS either so any thoughts of them being the Swans' fans second team is delusional.

So Team GWS need to build a supporter base from scratch when most people who have an interest in AFL team already support the Swans and have a dislike for the new team. Hmmmm.....

How on earth can this be a plausible idea. Roosy could barely hide his contempt for this on Open Mike the other evening and I agree with him 100%

Sweetie, if you have met me and you think i'm a "you and the rest of your Latte sipping elitist in city grotto dweller", maybe you should come and meet me again.

I was BORN in Penrith and the house that I own is about a 10 minute drive from GWS at Rooty Hill. Is that westie enough for you?

                      Indeed.

Mug Punter dont assume things - First and foremost I am a football fan - everytime I watch a swans game which is nearly all of them I support them wholeheartedly unless they are playing Carlton - I used to hate them but about twenty years ago when I got involved with Sydney football I realised that they are and have been crucial in growing the game in NSW and Sydney inparticular and just as importantly changing peoples perceptions of the game which 20 years ago most called it Gayfl. Sydney now as 4.5 million people living in it with the fast growing LGA's Blacktown, Parramatta, The Hills, Liverpool and Sydney City - in that order surely with the population and growth in Sydneys west a second team can be supported.

Obviously not a big enough Westie.

Has the announcement of GWS bought a HUGE influx of people from the west into the local clubs?

I want you to take an excursion to Westfield Mt Druitt with a pen and paper and ask 100 people whether or not they would support GWS. I bet you get more nays than ayes.

Why, what would that prove? Nothing - did you know that the local competition is Sydney was stronger prior to the Swans arrival - in the 90s it really dropped off - surely using your logic the Swans should have had the effect of imrproving the game at the grass roots level.

For what its worth though four years my club counted 13 senior players on the training track as a good night - fast forward 2010 and that number is more than 50, we have two senior sides and an under 18's and expect three senior teams in 2011 as we continue to rebuild - in additon 16 of my senior team are aged between 18 and 22 and only 3 over thirty but more importantly for a club that has historically (over 60 years) had a close relationship with the defense force more that 75% playing in the seniors are local lads and most were born in the area. Penrith and Norwest (based at Richmond) another two clubs who have struggled for years are also showing good signs on sustainable growth - Penrith in particular a building very well.
