Whilst we are happy to host a great event such as the 2nd Semi, I cant see why Sydney AFL would do this as there was never the likelihood of us actually playing in this game.

Instead Balmain and East Coast now have to travel 2 hours to a ground where there will be limited support from anyone to play a show piece event of Sydney AFL????

Can someone from the Sydney AFL please justify why this is the case???

Sydney AFL do a number of silly things, this is just another one. Totally agree, for any of the teams who finished in top position sure a week off round one is good, but commonsense has once again failed, lets have all teams who earned right to finish the top travel(what a reward that is). Plus opponents who won last week also have to travel for their reward too. There are some nice blokes who run the Sydney AFL office but their decisions are questionable a lot of the time too, they need to have a bit of a look at themselves and maybe consult with the people too???

The same goes with the scheduling of regular season games.For the last three years EAST COAST have had to play a 6.00pm night game there it makes it hard for supporters and support staff +players when you get back to north west at 10.30-11.00pm

I would imagine that the Lions would have applied to the league to play a finals game there. Good for the area to have a finals match on at a quality ground. It's a good run down there anyhow. Dunno about 2 hours. Maybe if you are driving a Morris Marina and taking Bulli Pass.

Last week was at Bruce Purser because the Giants had Blacktown booked. Not sure why they're not playing at Blacktown on Saturday, although since they introduced the final five the second semi has always been at a different ground to the other finals.

At least it won't be as wet and cold as last time they played a final in Wollongong.

Blokes from East Coast getting home after 10:00 PM. The heart bleeds. Hope those same guys don't put their hand up to play/support in the NEAFL side next year. The travel to the ACT/Qld etc will kill 'em.

The choice of NDP has got nothing to do with the Lions. The league were looking for a decent venue as other grounds were booked. UNSW is running the gate and Campbelltown the canteen. Lions did not apply to host the game. Bit of sooking going on here I think.

Just posing the question - surely you must believe the scheduling is ridiculous, unless you are Gary Burkinshaw.

You have the show piece game of the year apart from the grand final and you stick it in woollongong where the two teams have to travel 90+ minutes to get to. Surely the league wants to get as many people to this game as possible - that wont happen by playing the game in the gong!!!

Pretty sure in the QAFL when Morningside play Mt Gravatt in a final they dont go play the game in Noosa!!!!!!

Agree with you 110% CTL. What are they smoking in there at the Sydney AFL? Firstly, they are playing all Premier League finals at 3:10pm. What the hell is that about? Clubs, supporters and heaven forbid, the PLAYERS have gone through the whole season with games generally at 2 or half past 2. Then all of a sudden we get to the business end of the season and they push the time back to 3:10 to what, accommodate another game? Pleeease. All of a sudden players are using yellow balls and finishing the last half of games under lights. Older supporters who love going to the footy are all of a sudden have to drive home in pitch black and also getting home later. Volunteers that are working the finals are getting home later as well. They (Syd AFL) might think the games been put back only a little but is has a massive effect on all concerned. Secondly and more importantly, the Sydney AFL?s decision to have a final down at The Gong is one of their worst in a long time, and there have been some average ones. Why send the two best sides for the year down to a neutral venue an hour and a half away? In the record they said it was taking the game to the people of Wollongong. Correct me if I am wrong, when the Lions play they might be getting 100-200 people at their game max? And that is to a side they know and should support . I am presuming they would get around 500 at BOP. So by taking the game to The Gong we are depriving 300 Sydney AFL supporters the chance to attend the game. The AFL needs to come out an explain to the football public up here whether it is a venue issue or whether they are taking it down there to grow the game as they hinted in the record. What about Balmain if they win, they will have to play a GF at Blacktown without playing 1 final on it. I know most of these boys where there Teflon suits around and cannot be touched, I would have thought some general information and explaining would be good to better help inform the people of Sydney footy.

It's a storm in a teacup. Both teams have to play with a yellow ball and both will finish playing under lights. And i's a quality, neutral ground. For the catering club, it's a skip away, with no traffic.
BOP is being used for the Western Sydney Juniors Grand Finals and they deserve to have their big day at the best AFL venue in Sydney.
Nice place, the Gong, so what if it is an extra 30 minute drive, at least you aren't in first gear for most of the trip. Good luck to all teams playing for a Grand Final berth there today

Just got back home 20 mins ago.Did not see many locals there today, AS for bringing AFL to the Illawarra Actually i thought the attendence at todays game was very POOR but the quality of football was TOPs, hope some common sense prevails in future finals series
