I am sure Wests coach Ian Harry would take umbridge at being declared to have ordered the disgraceful events of 1987 when Mr Betros was in fact playing for Campbelltown. Campbelltown belted St George into submission in a game which should have been abandoned. There were at least 27 reports with Peter Betros reported at least 12 times.
Having witnessed this game I still get a shudder at the disgraceful events which took place. The umpires nor the League would tolerate this today. I am sure similar behaviour would see a club expelled from the competition.
Peter was retiring after the Grand Final and had some scores to settle and boy did he settle them. The Game was so violent that it actually made the news.

That was Campbelltowns first premiership in the top grade if I remember correctly. It was a year after the devastation of going through the season undefeated only to be beaten by North Shore in the GF.
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

That game was an absolute disgrace to our great game and to your club. It says a lot that the mongrel who instigated that went on to become the Campbelltown mayor.

If you are proud of that event and your club's conduct that day, as I suspect you and many of your club are, then it explains a lot why you struggle to attract and retain quality people there.

You can thank Betros for the introduction of the send-off rule into Sydney football. If I remember rightly there was a 'select committee' (I think they called it) investigation into the 1987 GF fiasco. It was open to the public and I believe visited by an ABC radio journalist on a couple of occasions.

What he did changed Sydney football. What resulted should be called the 'Betros Rule'.
