I've been out of touch with the local footy for awhile and I was wondering what had gone wrong with this club. I used to frequent Monarch quite a bit in the 90's and early 2000's and C/town were always strong and competitive. Why are they a basket case now??

Where does todays news, Campbelltown U18 withdraw from Div 2 competition leave this once proud club. Last year they won the Under 18 Div 2 Grand Final to this year not fielding a side. If their juniors don't have a pathway to their club, from where and how do they expect to nurture young players for their senior side. Now they can't say like they did last year we are fine with our 18's doing well with a number of quality players coming through as our future. From an outsider looking in, it would appear that the end is near. -

Sure there are still some good people out there but surely when the fish starts rotting it starts at the head. They have always been a largely foul-mouthed, loud and aggessive lot from my experience, from Matheson to the peanuts coming on here larging it up over the 86 GF (how pathetic) You'd have to there is a strong chance they could fold - they don't have much support in their own area and the rest of the football family cares even less....
Perhaps the Noacks could come out of retirement......Comment

It seems that the problem is a lack of numbers to support the u18s that have progressed through from last years unbeaten side, in round 1 they fielded at least 7 of those u18s in Premier Div and last week at least 5 were in the team that played Balmain, whilst they are probably not ready for Prem Div, they should be in good shape if they build around them, but there is no guarantee they will stay.
They have had several of their local juniors go over to Sydney Hills side this year in Yakimov, Fraser Brown & Cameron Gordon, that has not helped already dwindling numbers, and numerous players that have been there in the last five years are now running around in Camdens Div 2 side, about 11 from weekends side, not sure why they are leaving in such masses.Last edited by wise one; 19 April 2012, 02:36 AM.Comment

It is dissapointing with the demise of their 18's.
There is not many junior clubs close to Campbelltown so maybe the young guys dont want to travel, with the most numbers coming from Camden juniors.
The guys you mentioned running around for Camden on the weekend were mostly Camden juniors returning back to the club after playing 18's at C'town.
Would it be an idea to give Camden a crack at looking after an 18's team in the area? Seeing as though that is where most of the 16's come from.Comment

Sad news for footy indeed when a club with so many junior clubs cannot filed an underage side. So much for GWS's impact on Sydney footy....

And I assume you are referring to the 87 Grand Final.
Sounds like you almost want them to fold by the way. If so, are you basing that on how Campbelltown are now or on past experiences?
I hope they survive, the last thing Sydney senior footy needs is a return to the days of clubs folding.Comment

Agree with that. The south-west is an important strategic area, so the AFL needs Campbelltown to be around. But if they can't string some wins together this year, it's going to be hard to justify keeping them in Premier Division.

The 3 clubs around them and Penrith seem to be coming on well in the last 5 yearsComment

It seems that the area is as important to GWS (which is NSW/ACT AFL at present) as any area that is not Blacktown, ACT or Riverina.
The Campbelltown/Camden area has needed assistance and direction from the grass roots up for years, but they continue to deny it.
The good news is that they can still pay players! ... not sure what the "pie and parking" surcharge will be this year? ... would have to go up with only 2 games you would think!Comment

You know there used to be a team called Southern Districts that used to represent that region some time ago before being pushed aside by town. Also pretty sure both Camden and town have some people involved there who have ties to this club in fact pretty sure that there are a few famous names to have played there over the years.
Anyway I hope that Camden can continue to grow and town Can try and resurrect themselves so that the south west Sydney region has some representation.
And who knows if the game takes off in the region again maybe southern districts could return if s ground that befits them was available.Comment

Campbeltown havent had any juniors for 20 years. They have had a few good teams but they have always been an ordinary club.
Early 90's they win the wooden spoon. They spend a fortune on coaches in Murphy and Bird, they recruit a heap of mercenaries and they go from last to first win a few flag. They then recruit even more mercenaries (remember they even tried to sign a retired Gary Ablett snr) go to Canberra for a couple of years and come back broke.
They then spend another couple of years on the bottom, magically find some more money, sign Neil Brunton(who is a good bloke) as coach, bring back some of the old mercenaries JacK Barrett etc plus some new mercenaries and win another flag. Then they are broke again.
@@@@ club who buy a premiership every now and then. Never been interested in developing talent from within and deserve to be on the bottom.Comment
