    Chinese Whispers

Any truth in the whisper I overheard on the weekend that Sydney Uni will be utilising Drummoyne Oval next year?
Guess that the Marrickville Dockers will stay at Henson if that is the case.
Wish the students could pick a ground with parking though.

Parking probably won't come into it Short Half Head. My understanding is that Uni Oval #1 is deemed to be not big enough for NEAFL games to be played there, though the Students did play at least two NEAFL home games there (and won them both). So maybe exceptions were made because Henson (where other Syd Uni NEAFL home games have been played) wasn't available. It's not like there a lot of decent grounds in the inner west to choose from.
Mahoney is a sandpit, Marrickville Oval may be an option (tho' it gets used on Saturdays by Newington College for lower grade rugby games). Alan Davidson Oval in Alexandria is the best ground in the area, and it is the home ground of the Newtown Swans junior club (who are a pathway club to the Students) and i believe the Uni U18s team train there a bit.

Cheers KT. Last I heard, Drummoyne was costing $2k per match day in rent. Henson is around $1100.
Guess you can charge entry at those locations. What are the pies worth these days?

Seems to me that it's an unfortunate fact that most decisions senior clubs make are financially based.
These places are mostly run on the proverbial oily rag. Funnily enough many junior clubs are in quite a good
position financially for the simple reason that no one gets paid and they run canteens on match days whose
proceeds dwarf the takings at a senior game. Junior AFL in Sydney is pretty much financed by the humble
            BBQ snag and mediocre coffee.

You dont think the running expenses of a senior club being substantially higher may play a part - insurance costs alone rise by over 1000% one a player turns senior. We don't pay players and the canteen simply wouldn't cut it in a million years at our club.

Sure, you can't compare the two really. They are different beasts. The junior clubs cost way less to run, and they have more people at the games
to spend money at the canteen and merchandise stand. They are just lucky in that way I guess.
I think if there were more links between the junior and senior clubs in the same geographical areas it might be beneficial to both.

I haven't heard that whisper but it sounds like a good idea. The No I oval is not suitable for AFL....too short, too round, overhanging trees. Syd Uni NEAFL is using Henson and it seems to be working, Balmain is using it too.
But I'm not sure that Drummoyne would be suited to NEAFL as it's a bit of a cow meadow. If SHH is correct and Drummoyne costs $2k per week then I wonder where SydUni SFL would get that sort of money.

I understand that this "playing field" issue is the greatest obstacle to the growth of AFL in Sydney - just not enough playing fields and the problem just gets worse and worse as more clubs and more teams come on-stream. And inner Sydney is where it's at its worst

yeah thats another way for Balmain to rip off more assets for cash to fund the bottomless pit

Someone should have told Tom Harley that its only a strong rumour before he sent out emails about this last week.

Will need about three to replace him.
                            Thanks Tara.
