Rumours 2013 - Part 2

Noticed the previous "Rumours" thread for this year is now closed, so thought I'd throw this in.

I heard a strong rumour today that next season will see the introduction of an Under 17's competition to be run by the Greater Sydney Juniors throughout all competitions. Why this might be a strategy given that an "Elite" Under 16's and 18's competition will commence in 2014, it would suit the junior competition to fill in players for their own club.

However, I can't imagine the Sydney AFL Under 18's competition could operate, given they would only have a 12 month time frame to run 18's teams before they go to seniors.

At a Sydney AFL meeting earlier this year, it was announced that that 4 (possibly 5 or 6) teams would run in an elite Under 18's comp and two 18's divisions would run below that. If they go ahead, as rumoured, it would appear that the 18's comp would go further backwards.

For what purpose???? To turn out less than a handful of potential AFL rookies every year. And the majority of that level of player only ends up playing half the season in those teams anyway given State, Representaive & Academy commitments.

Meanwhile the fabric at the club level gets pulled apart as players (and their parent volunteers a point often not considered) move from clubs they've played 10 years or more with to ensure they playing at the "elite" level. Sure, that has always happened to a certain extent but it's now become endemic, an almost expected part of the competition.

The balance of development and effort put into comp structures and the like has swung too far in this direction. If the same effort was put into raising the standard of the existing structure without tinkering with it every year, we'd all be a lot better off.

The 'elite' players, or for the sake of this argument, the 'top percentile' out of these programs all head off to the real footy states for their chance, and when that doesn't come about, they'll hang around those states collecting a sweet coin to play footy, and all that Sydney footy is left with are the 'best of the rest'. More focus needs to be put on those lower percentile players that will hold up Sydney footy through the divisions, as they persue trades, study, or don't stray from from home.

Depends on what you call sweet coin. Money in the VFL which is the only real place you have a chance to get picked up from if your a Sydney local aint that great.
The "Sweet" money in the Suburban leagues will go to the local talent and ex AFL who don't return to the VFL ahead of unheard of Sydney kids.

AFL clubs have already identified most of the real talent a long time before under 18's and quite happily direct that talent where they want them to play anyway.

Not necessarily tara. Play the game and it is really simple for quite average players to pick up $2-300 a game in third division. Go Ok and have a VFL trial and $500 is not that hard to pick up these days.

Port pay around 150 a game for ressies and 450 for seniors may a changed a bit over the past two years but i doubt by much . Those figures were for a good player not a kpp.

Hardly enuf to make a living off.

My junior club Quakers Hill (Was Seven Hills when I started) is on struggle street of late, never really been that strong but gives local kids an opportunity to play footy. Now, the word is that the AFL in all their wisdom are putting in a junior club at The Ponds, less than 5km away. Why put another club in that close without helping to solidify the Bombers club? That'll be 30 years of history gone in a year or two.

Again, this isn't Melbourne people! Not everyone wants to play footy! Junior clubs (Established) in the area being Baulko, Parra (Greystanes), Penrith, Hawkesbury, Seven Hills (Quakers Hill) were all reasonably distant from each other so as not to step on toes. Now, Kellyville, Rooty Hill, St Clair, Fairfield (apparently there's a junior club there now) and with the eventual advent of this Ponds team........and don't even get me started on Senior footy.
