    Opinions - Danny's Diatribe on sydneyafl.com.au

    I had to ask....

What do people think? It reminds of Trevor Marmalade's segment on the Footy Show which 'had its moments'.

I am not sure that is fair ... Trevor managed to capture matters of broader interest rather than matters which may be side splitting within a single Club. It is a tricky thing to be funny and even harder when the humour is based on some level of personal knowledge of the foibles of the individual. My guess is that regardless it will be 'hoovered up' by the small number of folk that faithfully follow the competition and found their way to the forum.

I suppose to paraphrase an old joke ... people said the article was not fit to be read by pigs, but I think it was. (oink)

I'm pleased that there is a bit of commentary about our comp - ANY commentary is a welcome innovation. We haven't had any since we lost KT (Kevin Taylor) and Simon Kelly, Michael Byrne and Helen Meyer many years ago.
I hope that people will be interested enough to contribute material to Danny so that his segment gets better.

Yeh the two I have read I had no idea who they were about mostly. Was something about greeny becoming forest gump... bit harsh.

Just re read it, not bad. Not good, but I'll read it every week.

I would much prefer to read the diatribe than the tripe of women's football on the website. League should rename it sydneywomensafl.com.au
Seriously women shouldn't even be playing let alone be on this site. Or at least have their own site.

AFL Sydney took over running the Sydney comp a couple of years ago, and they've expanded to two divisions since then. Generally the Sydney AFL website will run stories they're given; and the girls are promoting themselves well at the moment.

Ash, check your calendar ... year 2014 not 1914. A large slice of the success of our code is due to women, as spectators, supporters and now as players. The growth in the women's competition is great; and in my experience, they are a lower administrative load to have within the club, then adding another men's team. I guess you will really face a difficult issue when the diatribe includes observations about the female players and teams.

So to you women's afl is of equal standing to men's and deserves the same if not more coverage?
Ok well this weekend turn off your foxtel and go spend your weekend watching 3-4 women's games instead at their highest level- whatever that is.
Or go watch a game of international men's netball.
Come back Monday and let me know what you think then.
Yes female participation is great in a certain capacity - 9s etc as is touch footy for league(oh I'm a sexist) but please some common sense needed.

Whilst I don't agree with his sexist views I think ash has a point - the local comp is so weak these days that the only good news story they can come up with is the chicks' comp.

I've seen a couple of SFL games this season and I am convinced I have never seen it at a lower ebb. It fair dinkum is about halfway between first and reserve grade from back in the 90s.

And it is not hard to see why - when you have 50+ top line first graders taken out of the system to make up the NEAFL numbers then the top 5-6 players of each side remaining are replaced by the bottom 5-6 players leading to a huge drop in playing standard.

I don't think anyone who has any genuine knowledge and interest in the game in Sydney can dispute this.

Cue usual muppets from Sydney Uni to attack me again.... ho hum

I'm a glass is half full kind of guy and not nearly as pessimistic as some about the standard of our league.

But let's get back to the issues and ease off on the personal attacks. I'm busy at work at the moment, but I may need to do some editing a bit later.

If you don't like Danny's article - don't read it.
If you don't want to know about women's footy - don't read it.

As far as I'm concerned, any promotion of Sydney footy and Sydney footy clubs is great. Everyone knows that the Sydney press does nothing for local footy like other cities/states around Australia. There are some great success stories out there about players from Sydney and there could be more too but without more articles in the press (or the Sydney AFL website) we may never know about them. For example, I hope we hear more about the guys from the Sydney competition that took part in the Foxtel program they are currently filming called the recruit, some of those guys I hear have been doing quite well but I bet Foxtel won't give us a good follow up of these guys.
