Incident is not a good look but the AFL should also be really concerned about the state of umpiring here.
Village Green is the size of a postage stamp yet as usual there are three central umpires appointed to the game so no excuses from them for not being able to see the play. Not only that you can clearly see the boundary ump right there on the spot and yet no free kick and no report. Seriously you have to wonder what else they missed out there.
7 officials on the ground and not one of them sees the incident?
Especially when the ball is still in the vicinity?Comment

It's gone viral. Not a good look for our league.
Hopefully Alex Thompson, the young UNSW-ES player, is OK. Concussion is a real issue at the best of times, and that one looks really bad.

That won't help the player's cause one little bit.Comment

As for the umpires, they were too busy marching players 50 for being in the protected space around mark to see anything else all day.
Also not a good look to have drunk uni officials on the grounds abusing wests huddle at 3/4 time, with beers in hand, what was the edict sent out about alcohol and people in official club roles on game day, obviously not everyone got the memo.Comment

The trouble is that the eyes of the sporting universe will be on our insignificant little tribunal tomorrow night - the incident might well be worth 3-4 weeks but the pressure will be on to look tough and decisive....like Often Confused said, same thought process as the one punch legislation.

3-4 weeks, if u did that in public on a street 3-4 weeks would be a dream 3-4 years and some bars under the new laws and would be getting one good barrister. A lead from tribunal needs to occur, strong stance and erradicate these acts. Lucky nothing serious occured this publicity does nothing for the game

Just love all these people who have seen the 5 second grab and are judge and jury on the incident and happy to hang him high!
Simple defence;
"Sir, please run the video tape ... as you can see, when I ran in to block my opponent, I turned my back on him, and I was elbowed to the back of the head. I have no recollection of what happened for the next several minutes. Here is the club doctor's confirmation that I have suffered a mild concussion as a result of the unprovoked blow to the back of my head from the UNSW player, who can be seen running away after the incident"
... next case ...
Did the UNSW player happen to get sited as well? ... No? ... no free kicks either way?Comment

I see a lot of similarities between this incident and that of Cox-Vickery. Both involve an initial illegal hit followed by retaliation which leads to a concussion. The initial contact is ignored by the league and the retaliator is cited.
In defence of the umpires, all eyes would be firmly on the next contest (ignoring the ball in flight cause a ball has never given away a free kick in 150 years) and who is going to suspect the punch which literally occurs in a split second? The only way to really see this is if you saw the first incident and thus followed these 2 players expecting something, or if it literally was obstructing your view of the next contest. The umpire would be checking the mark and the protected area and calling play on when the kicker moves around the mark(forget to call play on and the guy on the mark gives you a gobfull cause he can't chase) , then he has to quickly turn and run to the next contest looking for illegal blocks and holds as the ball is in flight(miss anything here and the fwds blow their stack). The only time you can really scan the area is when a player is taking an uncontested mark but then you'll be 1m out with your mark for a shot at goal and cop it again.
Players never have to worry about this crap and thus often get a better look at these off the ball incidents.....and not all players would have seen it.
Did the Uni players all run in to fly the flag? I suggest they missed it too or the footage would have definitely included an all-in event.(I wasn't there so I'm going out on a limb here)
How many people watched the footage numerous times? If you did, ask yourself why? There is still conjecture on this site on whether the initial contact between the 2 players was a push or strike.
I doubt anyone who has ever donned an orange shirt would ever be so critical. Don't forget that AFL umpires are fully miked up to people in boxes with footage of replays from all angles.Comment

Some of you guys must have better eyes than I (entirely possible given my age) but to me the initial contact appeared more of a fend off than an attempted strike. How some of you are leaping to the alternate conclusion mystifies me a bit. He marked, kicked, ran a straight line, got blocked, got around him with what appeared to many to be a push, albeit to the head area, and he deserves punishment?! In any case if it was an attempted strike by the UNSW-ES player, I would suggest he would NOT be charged along the lines of the Wests player. Stark difference.

Some people on this forum and off this forum need to take a deep breath and simply let it play out in the judiciary. Calls for "jail time" WTF? Calls for him to be banned for 8-12 weeks - WTF? IMO he will go to the tribunal and get approx. 6 weeks. Anything longer than that and it is excessive. Consider what Barry Hall (7 weeks) Ty Vickery (4 weeks) & Rhys Conca (2 weeks) did and I don't see too much of a difference to this incident.
Unfortunately for Marcus he had a brain explosion after taking exception to a hit to the back of his head. I would suggest that many on this forum and off this forum have had moments that they regret and wish they could take back. I reckon Marcus would also regret his actions and now he has to face his name and his image being splashed across Australian & International media outlets.
I don't know Marcus well, however the times that I have met him he is actually a reasonably reserved character and I reckon some on this forum may be going harder at him due to him playing at Wests or being Daves brother. I don't condone his actions at all, but I'm certainly not going to hang him for it.Comment
