    CWAFL Lightning premiership

AFL LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIP STRIKES DUBBO THIS WEEKEND

AFL Action comes to the Central West this coming weekend when the Central West Australian Football League holds its season launch and lightning premiership at Dubbo?s Victoria Park.

The lightning premiership sees ten teams in two pools playing a round robin, with the winners of both pools meeting in the Grand Final on Saturday night.

The lightening carnival features shortened matches and will showcase the talent on offer across all the clubs in the CWAFL in season 2003.

The action starts at 6.30pm Friday night under lights when Dubbo 2 take on the Dubbo All Stars. The games continue Friday night and all through Saturday and features sides from Bathurst, Charles Sturt University, Cowra, Dubbo, Katoomba-Lithgow, Mudgee and Parkes. Dubbo are fielding two sides as well as a Dubbo "All Stars" team that has assembled for the carnival.

The CWAFL will be holding its season launch at 6.15pm on the Saturday at Victoria Park. This year the CWAFL will be promoting and recognising our accredited umpires in this "year of the official", in line with AFL initiatives of promoting umpires and their importance to the game. All club captains from the CWAFL will be in attendance.

The League will also be announcing the CWAFL Representative coach and information as well as policies and directions for the year

The CWAFL season launch will be followed by an Under 17s match at 7:30. In keeping with the CWAFL?s major priority of promoting juniors, an East v West under 17 CWAFL match will be played as a curtain raiser to the lightning premiership Grand Final. It will showcase the best junior talent from across the Central West, and also act as a trial for the CWAFL representative season. This starts with a match v Northern Riverina on the 17th of May, and also involves a development squad playing against other leagues further south.

This match will be followed by the Grand Final, which will see the two top sides from each section squaring off for the first honours of season 2003 as well as cash prizes for the successful club.

    Details:

The lightning premiership will be played in two sections and will feature 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. The team with the most points after the round robin will be declared the winner of the section and then goes into the Grand Final. In the case of a tie the team with best for and against goes through. If still a tie the team that had a victory over the other team goes through.

    The two sections are:

Great to hear some CWAFL news on here.

Being a Dubbo boy originally (now studying in sydney) i'd love to be able to keep up to date with the progress of the Demons.
Good stuff phil. The lightning premiership sounds great too- should be a good kick off fo the CWAFL.

A strong and committed Cowra side were too good for CSU in the final. The carnival was a great success, the final table is below - I don't have individual match scores.

On a personal note the Mountain Lions went down by a kick in three games and were only really beaten by the eventual winners Cowra Blues.

      Congrats Cowra.

      Final standings:

      Winner Cowra
      Runner up CSU Bulldogs
      3rd Dubbo Demons 1 3 Wins 1 Loss +204
      4th Indigenous Allstars 3 Wins 1 Loss -42
      5th Parkes Panthers 2 Wins 2 Loss + 87
      6th Bathurst Eagles 2 Wins 2 Loss -57
      7th Orange Tigers 1 Win 3 Loss -92

Mudgee Black Swans, Dubbo Demons 2 and Katoomba/Lithgow Mountain Lions finished outside the Prize Money
      Katoomba-Lithgow 20.15 (135)
      Orange 5.14 (44)
