There has been a lot of talk about the Swans and ugly footy this year. Points being mentioned include flooding, tagging and the lack of contested grabs in todays footy compared with 30 years ago. With the AFL CEO and Sammy Newman getting into the act I only see the issue broadening. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve it? Would a rule change or two be beneficial?
I suggest a simple idea of trying to speed things up by allowing faster restarts following a behind and also quicker throw ins and restarts following a goal without unnecessary waiting. I think some of this was tried in the Wizard Cup. The idea is that less stoppage may reduce the ability of footballers to continually be able to flood the defending 50m arc.
Will the problem solve it in time? Are more drastic measures necessary?
