    The Finals

With Penno & Wests securing the top two spots, the race for the final 2 positions is on.

I think the 4 will be

    Wests
    Penno
    Norths
    UNSW/ES

with ECE to just miss out.Although it might come down to percentage.

Will be interesting to see how ECE respond over the next two weeks. If they dont make it they would have to mark it down as another year wasted, considering the money spent on players and there active recruitment.

Will the coach be under pressure to be there in 2006 as they have a experieced former coach playing for them who would be happy to take over the reigns.

One things for sure is that its going to be an interesting few weeks.

Personally, i think ECE need to keep that list for another year at least, coach included,as its pretty hard for a team to gell after a short season, especially with the big 3 from Olds Park joining the mix...it will be a shame if they miss out this year, but God help whoever they play next year..on paper they have the potential to carve right up over the next few years.. otherwise i'll take Wests for a flag, too hard at the ball from what ive seen this year.

I think the problem is they didnt recruit enough players.

Buy another half dozen and that should fix the problem.

Where are the finals being played at??
            How many games at Henson??
Are both major and minor semi finals played on the same weekend or split? Personally I think a split weekenend does not benefit any semi final team particularly the sides finishing 1 and 2 so why not play 1V2 on sat, and 3V4 on Sun.

The schedules are up at http://www.sydneyafl.com.au/default....play&aid=96536

The semi-finals are both played on the one weekend, with all finals played at Henson Park. The grand final is on Saturday 10th September - first time we've had a Saturday grand final for many a long year.

Thanks NL. I still havent heard of a good explanation of why the reserves on Grand final day are played before the U/18s. I know the BDAFL have only one final each week, I prefer the format taken by the SFL.

Should be a cracker - Penno and Wests who have performed all year - who will crack come the finals?...Easts and Norths who have loads of grand finals experience - will they be able to use this to gain a grand finals berth - and ECE are still a chance too if they win particularly in the last round.

                  Finals

A wasted season is one where you do not improve and you can only look to the next season with hope you may go ok.

There is already one regular finals contender well and truly out and if East Coast manage a couple of wins another one may join them.

Even if they do miss out East Coast have certainly improved again and have plenty of depth and youth in their reserves side and although their U18's have struggled this season a number of them will make the step to senior football next year.

As far as their coach being under pressure , what coach isn't?
I wouldn't be suprised if a few coaches found themselves looking for new positions next year. As for Garner wanting to take over I seriously doubt that he would be anything but supportive of his coach after the seemingly bizarre events of earlier this season. I would imagine that he has some fairly strong opinions about those with their own agendas working in the background.

I will certainly watch the next two weeks with interest and think that regardless of who makes up fourth spot that the Magpies will be the team to beat.

Hasnt Penno already done that? And at Henson?

The next few weeks should see some really tough games as sides fight for thier spot in the four. I see the final four shaping up as such:

                      Wests 60
                      Penno 56
                      UNSW 44
                      Nth Shore 40
                      --------------------
                      (ECE) 40

Wests will romp in over saints, and then easily (reasonably) account for the out of form penno to lock up the minor prem.
Penno will struggle through for a victory over the gong, before succumbing to the inform wests outfit out to avenge thier earlier loss.
UNSW will detroy the hapless c'town before thier experience gets them over the line in the final round v ECE.
Nths i think will lose to ECE this week but only by a small margin (2 goals max), before comfortably taking care of an imroving YOUNG saints side.
ECE to beat nths this week, but falter at the final hurdle to have come so painstakingly close.

ECE to miss out on % alone.

On a side note..... When, if ever, did ECE (or baulko) last make finals? Obviously i'm just refering to Seniors. I am aware that the seconds and 18's have had some recent success in this area.

Don't get me wrong I think Penno are a very good side as are the Ecoast, UNSW-ES and Nth Shore.

Even though Penno got over wests fairly easily earlier in the year I think that their physical style of play plus their onball strength will be better suited to finals football. Nth Shore also flogged Penno early in the year but I still think Penno are the better side. (Time will tell I guess)

It will be interesting to see if both camps play all their cards in their last round clash. I am sure both sides will want to go into the finals with a pyschological advantage of a last round win.

I will be watching with interest.

Check your figures again.....ECE play UNSW in the last round as you mentioned. If ECE win UNSW can only get to 40pts meaning ECE will go through on %. The boys from out baulko way will make the finals if they can win their last two!

Can anybody give me any clues as to why Shearer, Sanecow and humphrey (to name a few) appear to be against improving the level of footy within Sydney?

To improve, both individually and as a team, you firstly have to surround yourself with more talented individuals - it doesn't JUST HAPPEN from having a strong junior club, if this were the case then the AFL would still having area club zones in place, old school VFL style.

I would also like to know where to access the financial statements relating to player payments for each of the Sydney AFL teams. These must be available somewhere as most people who post here appear to have intimate details of what Wests, ECE and Norths, etc are paying out each game.

Humphrey Bear........shame to ECE for attempting to raise the bar a little, which has resulted in an increase in player stocks across sydney and the rep team (I didn't hear you complain when some of these recruits helped Sydney AFL win in Brisbane). Shame on them for acquiring information on player movements across to Sydney and then acting on them - I challenge any organisation in the world, let alone local sporting club, to be successful based on internal development with no outside recruiting. On the field they may not have had the ideal results so far this year. I suppose you were such an advanced child that you learnt to walk before you could crawl.

I'll bet that most, if not all, of these recruits moved to Sydney for work committments and happened to be associated with someone from the ECE, be it a current player, ex player, supporter/volunteer or employee.

                            P.S.

Sanecow.....get over it. Come up with something original and we'll laugh with you, not at you.

Very rough to use that as an indicator... They were beaten by the Bombers after hearing only hours before the game that Club Captain Barnaby Howarth had suffered a stroke and was still in a critical condition. This would have thrown the playin group off footy massively, adding to the fact that they were missing a lot of senior players resulting in a fair few 18s getting a game that day.
