Well, actually you comment on something I posted two days ago, it's not like I went on for days about it. However, I am still stunned at the lack of professionalism in the SFL. It will be a while before I can get past that. No wonder the Swans prefer their players to win every week in the ACT.

      Gambler,
Without mention to the others, I have never read on this site or anywhere else Shearer doing anything but promoting football.

        Fair enough Coastal Boy,

The post itself wasn't aimed at specific people it was more of a general comment on the underlying attitudes on a forum that is meant to be about promoting and improving Sydney footy.

how about starting a thread which highlights the positive things going on in and around sydney...the young players to keep an eye on, getting big crowds along to the final rounds and the finals at Henson, Phelan medal hopefuls, club B&F's, etc.

Lets create a positive feeling and watch people jump on the bandwagon, not ridicule VOLUNTEERS for trying to start the bandwagon.

Shame on them for acquiring information on player movements across to Sydney and then acting on them - I challenge any organisation in the world, let alone local sporting club, to be successful based on internal development with no outside recruiting. On the field they may not have had the ideal results so far this year. I suppose you were such an advanced child that you learnt to walk before you could crawl.

          Mr Gambler you misunderstand me.

Earlier in this very thread I suggested the team formerly known as Baulkham Hills were on the right track and their only mistake was not to pursue it further.

I am sure they will be able to rectify that next year.

C'mon Humphrey - I realise that you don't wear pants, and your lack of speech is a little inhibiting but I'm sure you can do it if you try really hard......

There you go, you can say it... and considering that they have been called that now for 5 years, I think you should.

                Gambler,
Fair comments indeed. I agree that many opinions in football are negative and should be more positive. I do see a point though that each new idea has to be discussed so the AFL community does not go off half baked and with the best intentions screw the whole lot up. Sometimes this critique is a little negative but should not be outlawed.

Phelan Medal.......I dont think the winner of the Phelan last year from UNSW(a mental blank here, sorry!) won his teams own best and fairest. As did Kypper not win his own team in reserves. Any opinions on the reason behind this?????????

Why in the world would playing both the semi finals on the same weekend be better?
If there is a top five fair enough, but I've never seen a finals series cut to three weeks.
It just makes no sense to me.
What is wrong with September 17 as grand final day?

Because in a top 4 situation, the teams finishing first and second run a real risk of playing the final round, missing a week, playing, missing a week and then being expected to front up in the Grand Final and play as they have all year- a tough ask in amateur sport quite often.

It also tends to drag out the final series. The Clubs in the BDAFL stated they prefered the 3 week option and AFAIK it will return to that way from 2006.

I assume your commenting on me BMR. It's just my opinion.
My issue with a 4 week finals series is this. 3v4 in week 1, followed by 1v2 in week 2. So if games are won as per ranking, 2v3 in week 3 - team 3 has an extra week off to repair and prepare for the prelim, thats not fair on team 2 who finished higher than them on the table. Also, say team 1 had a bye in the last round - thats two weekends without footy before the major semi finals which I would not think is desirable. I reckon a 3 week semi final is fairer to the top teams. Whats the point in dragging it out over 4 weeks anyway?

Don't fear Pekay ... Wollongong play their last game for the year tomorrow at sunny North Dalton Park ... don't think we would be fussed with having 2 weeks off before getting the opportunity to play in the major semi.

I must say that I enjoyed my few games with this very well administered club with amazing support staff & unbelievable local business support.

With some exciting recruits on the horizon I advise that you can look out for the Lions in their quest to be Kings of the Jungle in 2006.

I think it makes more sense to play both the semis on the same weekend - teams have got used to playing every week during the season, but stretching a final 4 series over 4 weeks leaves teams under-done. Also the team that wins the 3rd v 4th game has the advantage of an extra week off for the prelim that the loser of 1st v 2nd doesn't have.
But given the order the games are played, it may be worth re-naming them to Major and Minor semi-finals. Playing the 2nd semi before the 1st semi, from a naming point of view, doesn't make much sense.

Check your figures again.....ECE play UNSW in the last round as you mentioned. If ECE win UNSW can only get to 40pts meaning ECE will go through on %. The boys from out baulko way will make the finals if they can win their last two!
                            Coastal Boy,

I think my figures are right. I was tipping the results for the final 2 rounds and i tipped ECE to go down to UNSW in the final round. I then predicted my top four based on these results.

Your right ECE chances are firmly in thier own hands, it was just my tip that they would miss out.

And in around 24hrs, we can see how well those theories of mine are starting to stack up.

I wasn't commenting against anyone, Coastal Boy, just stating my strongest of opposition to what is, in my opinion, a stupid way of doing things.

Personally, I've never seen or heard of a three week finals series under the McIntyre Top 4 system.
First semi, Second semi, Prelim, Granny - that's the way club's have had to go about it since the system was brought in in 1924.
I see your arguments about the second semi winner having two weeks off in the finals and I see that as an advantage as they can get their players right and fresh for the biggest day of the year.
Is there a way of stopping the minor premiers having two weeks off in a top 5 if they win their first final? No, so why worry about it in the top 4.
As for the 'advantage' of either 3 or 4 getting the second week off, well I say that 's even because 1 or 2 have had the first week so both have close enough to the same situation anyway.
I don't think four weeks is dragging it out too long, it's giving the grand final the build up it deserves.
The other point is that if the league officials are trying to maximise attendances and get people to come out to the footy, especially in finals, footy supporters are more likely to pick one match on a week and go to it - whereas if there is only one match per weekend, you will get more people in to have a look.

Just my thoughts, but why change what ain't broke?
