    NEWSFLASH: NSW AFL bungle

Could you imagine if the AFL Kangaroos were given an extra game to qualify for the top four and hence deprive the Swans of the double chance? What an outrage, and what a laughing stock the whole competition would be. Well wait for this one...

I've read previously on RWO and been told by others about problems with the NSW AFL Commission and how they are well below par. Well I'd never taken a great deal of notice before I heard about their this clanger...

In First Division, Sydney Uni have had an extra game over both UTS and Manly, and hence have been able to scrape past both of them to 'win' the minor premiership, and more importantly, the double chance. Here is the ladder (hope it looks clear) after the end of the home and away season:

POS TEAM P W L D For Ag PC Pts
    1 SYDNEY UNIVERSITY 14 11 3 0 1842 718 256.55 44
    2 UTS 13 11 2 0 1681 677 248.30 44
    3 MANLY-WARRINGAH 13 11 2 0 1366 723 188.93 44
    4 PENRITH 13 8 5 0 1219 1157 105.36 32

    5 SOUTHERN SHARKS 14 7 7 0 1150 1244 92.44 28
    6 MACQUARIE UNI 13 3 10 0 735 1567 46.90 12
    7 HOLROYD-PARRA 13 2 11 0 670 1447 46.30 8
    8 SOUTH-WEST SYD 13 0 13 0 597 1727 34.57 0

What it shows is that Syd Uni have played 14 games, one more than both UTS and Manly.

This was due to a wash-out one week where Syd Uni (and Southern Sharks) had the bye. This means that all of the other teams get NO points for the wash-out - not even split points, even though Manly was due to play the bottom team (at home) that did not win a game all year. It therefore deprives UTS of a much deserved minor premiership and Manly of the double chance, as they are not able to play the same number of games .

Apparently the league has the ability to award 4 points for all byes as another resolution to the problem (as they do in the NRL), but they will only do this in "exceptional circumstances". For some reason they don't deem an uneven number of H&A games to be "exceptional circumstances". Well if this is not exceptional circumstances I don't know what is.

Memo to NSW AFL - have the balls to make a decision in the best interests of Australian football and the integrity of the competition in this city and state, or be seen as a joke.

Yes! It is totally wrong. Sorting according to win/loss ratio would also correct the unjustice.

I never quite understood why teams received points for byes. You didn't play a game so you should get nothing, zilch, zero. Since all teams will receive the same amount of byes, no team would be disadvantaged.

If points are awarded for byes, how did SOUTH-WEST SYD manage to get no points? They must really suck.

Read the initial post more carefully Cow. Points were NOT awarded for byes.

Agreed, but that only works well when all teams play the same amount of games...

We are talking local footy, not AFL.

I understand that, but footy is a winter sport. I can't recall a wash-out in any level of footy (even high school) in Tasmania as a lad (or any winter sport except maybe netball).

I grew up in Sydney, playing soccer. It was washed out fairly regularly.

Maybe you didn't get torrential rain in winter, like Sydney used to get.
