NorthShoreAngel, you obviously have much to learn about AFL recruiting.
It's not enough to have one good year in a relatively lower league (compared to other country and city leagues over australia). Note that the nominated people have to be of a much higher quality than your average player, plus they have to have had the exposure to be seen by recruiters.
It's not a reward to people who can play good footy, its a reward for those who play, or have the potential to play, outstanding footy.
Dean is a great player, but would not cut it in an AFL midfield (no disrespect to the kid).
Dylan is a fantastic player and I expect him to do big things in the future. Congratulations and good luck!Comment

The draft camp is for 17 year-olds, and usually is the best players from the under-18s championships.
Dean Davies is a year too old for the camp, but he's still very much eligible for the draft. It's up to the AFL clubs to decide whether to pick him.

I only saw two games of SFL this year the first the Rep Game against Riverina and the second the Grand Final both at Henson.
Davies was impressive in both and I would have had him in the top three BOG in both games for his side.
He later took out the Phelan suggesting to me that he wasn't only good in those two games!
Seems to me he does well in stronger company and rises to the occassion.Comment

Good points TG... He mut be a chance for a rookie spot. Although i don't think it would be overly smart of the swans to rookie dean. They already have too many small running players as it is. I would imagine Kieren Jack would find the same problem.Comment

Jack has a big advantage in that he is a year younger. Once you get past draft camp age you nearly have to win the Liston or the Magary to get into the AFL.
Pretty sure 99% AFL of recruiters wouldnt know which League the Phelan Medal was from.Comment

What about a young footballer James Whelan?? Was he included in the draft camp does anyone know. T Wolnizer a young man from Geelong may also be invited but i am unsure??? If anyone has a list can they confirm if they know if these two young guns are in or not!

That Wolnizer bloke can play... watched him pick up 30 touches by halftime and give a strong hip & shoulder (elbow) to a UNSW-ES players melon earlier this year busting his jaw!
Think they call him T-Bone....
Played a lot of rep footy in Geelong (Falcons TAC Cup) before coming to Sydney...
Pretty confident kid too!
I believe he has nominated for the draft.

I ain't an expert on junior development in NSW (in particular, how many NSW-men have been invited in previous years), but the Draft Camp invitee list strikes me as a bit of a slap in the face for the quality of our juniors here.
My club in SA, Norwood, had 4 players invited alone. Mathematically (only 1.5 million people in the state divided by 9 SANFL clubs) Norwood has a catchment of about 160,000 people.
Even granted that we're a minority (but, I hope, growing) winter sport among youngsters in NSW, I would have hoped we could do better than 1 from a catchment of over 6.5 million. Especially bearing in mind that (unless there's been a sudden change) Aussie Rules is the predominant footy code in the Wagga/Riverina area.
It's not just the draft camp convenors, either. Footy draft, in a list published before the draft camp invitees were announced, had no-one from NSW (and as far as I can see just one ACT player) in its list of 80-odd potential draftees. The variety of non-Victorian players on both lists rebuts any idea that our representation is so low only because the powers that be are Victorian-centric.
Of course, the Swans will still have the opportunity to put some local kids on the rookie list and try to bring them up to scratch-- but that just begs the question of why so few are apparently able to mix it on a level playing field at 17 or 18 yoa.
