When you next watch the Grand Final (you know, like tonight), watch Judd's disposal. Almost none of his kicks on the run result in an effective possession for a teammate (I would say none but there may be one I missed). Only a kick from a free kick and his handballs are effective. He gathered a lot of possessions but geez he did nothing with them. Is he always this crap or was it just one game? Why don't the umpires pay attention when they are handing out awards?
Judd - worst Norm Smith winner ever

Giant, don't be a tool. Have you watched the grand final?
Have watched the GF once or twice (a day) - Monty was my choice for NSM but Judd was probably the most individually brilliant player on the day. And as I've said elsewhere I think he's the best new player I've seen in a decade. To suggest he's crap on the basis of some ordinary kicking from one game (which he otherwise starred in) is trolling.
And you used to have a sense of humour!!Comment

Sorry, didn't realise you only watched one game all season. Does explain some of your "insights" tho.Comment

My view at the time - and it hasn't changed - is that Judd was the safe option for the NSM. He was probably the most notable WC player on the day, even if not as effective as he can be, and he is a very very good player. I don't think there were many Eagles who could claim to have had a noticeably better game than Judd.
The Swans, as is their wont, put in a very even performance. The three best performed Swans were probably a midget delisted two years ago who half the commentating public still can't tell apart from a team mate, a tall lanky defender who was meant to be the Swans' weak link going in, and a runner who, despite being a past top 5 draft pick, is low profile. While we all might have belief in these three and their long term place in the team (or not, as the case may be for at least two of them, judging by previous RWO posts), there is a chance that they'll fade into obscurity. A NSM to one of these three could have landed up in the obscure trivia basket in years to come.
Had one of the higher profile Swans been on a par with Judd for noticeability, maybe they'd have got the nod. But only B1 and Goodsey probably came close, and neither of them had a better game than Monty, LRT or Fosdike.Comment

Great post Liz.
I asked this question on RWO post GF as I attended the game with a wiggle fan and met up with some of the blue and gold brigade after the game. They were spitting chips over Judds game and disgusted he got the NSM. I was quite surprised at the vitriol and how dirty they were. I didn't really pay individual attention to their players on the day. I tend not see the opposition - think I have one red and one white eye! After watching the game replay a couple of times - his use was pretty poor and it certainly led to break downs of some very positive forward moves for them. But really - who could he kick it to in their forward line?
He certainly is a champion player. There isn't a player in the comp that breaks the lines like he does. He is a great talent and at so young, barring injury, will be one of this generations legends. If he was coming to the Swans I would be in raptures. He's uncanny.
It's all done and dusted and as the players say - all those individual accolades would be traded in a second for a Premiership medal and didn't Judd say that on the day himself?
So good luck to him. When we go around 2006 hopefully it's us with the medals everyone wants again!
Note: I watched the Freo 2003 game and it occurred to me that McVeigh has quite a similar style - the way he runs and carry's the ball - OK you can all stop laughing nowComment

I think he is a great player who had a day that was well below what he is capable of, and it was still a performance that was Norm Smith worthy. I don't think any other weagle could have won it, fosdike does not have the same game turning potential with evey touch and i guess that is what the "experts" saw. I agree that he wasted a lot of possessions, but he did threaten to win the game by himself...
His ability to break tackles is amazing. He almost expects to be able to do it to the extent that when he does get wrapped up it results in a lot of HTB decisions, or ones that must go close.
If Kerr had played the whole match......I wish my weed was EMO so it would cut itselfComment

I haven't re-watched the whole game focussing just on Judd, but while I remember he got off to a blistering start, by the last quarter he was pretty ineffective. Just look at the stoppages, especially after Monty's goal, that Judd would have used his pace to accelerate away from in the first quarter, but by the last he was being wrapped up in tackles.
True, though, if Kerr had played the whole match fully fit he may well have gotten them over the line.
There's a good case for Monty getting the NSM - he did have a major influence on the outcome of the game in that last quarter. Not just his goal, but acts like that terrific tackle off-balance on Nicoski (IIRC) on the wing, and actually winning clearances.Last edited by Xie Shan; 12 December 2005, 05:55 PM.Comment
