    Swans Vs Bloods

Not sure if its been asked before but here goes:

After all of the talk last year about " The bloods" and the bumber stickers this year with the membership packages advertising the bloods does anyone think that the club might be moving toward calling us the bloods for good rather than the swans?

Personally i don't mind it, I am a liflong Swans supporter and most time member and it would get some getting used to but i've always called them the bloods when i'm roaring at the footy as well.

    Thoughts!!!
    go bloods!!

They won't drop the Swans, but the Bloods nickname will probably be used more often than before. Much better than the Swannies.

Several clubs have very successfully identified themselves with older or other nicknames. If someone mentions the 'Shinboners', or the 'Dons' everyone knows who they are talking about. These names don't detract from 'Kangaroos' or 'Bombers' though.

The Swans have been called the 'Bloods' informally for most of their existence. I see no reason why they shouldn't take advantage of it, though I would be furious if they tried to make it the official name.

I think we should start calling Hawthorn the Mayblooms again.

I had always thought that it came from the blood bath GF in 1945. But having just read the history on the club site I realise i waswrong in that.

Assume for a moment we did become the Bloods officially

That would mean the death of Cyggy and an army of little kiddies would be traumatised

But what would our new mascot be?

Quote from im Main's book "Plugger and the Mighty Swans" p23.

"It was during this period [ 1933 ] South Melbourne first used the nickname name 'the Swans'. The name was conceived by Sporting Globe football writer Hec de Lacy, who suggested South had so many West Australians on its list that the club should chage its nickname from 'the Bloods' or 'Blood-stained Angels' to the Swans. The name stuck."

This accords with my memory of events as told to me by my father. As a family that has been supporting the Swans since before 1950 I recall asking my father at the footy about the name 'the swans'. What he told me is what Jim Main said. My father was from WA and this had a bearing on him deciding to follow South when he came to Victoria.

For what it is worth we always called our team 'the bloods' or just 'South' as did everyone else in the members area and Bloods supporters elsewhere. I can't recall the name 'the Swans being commonly used by the supporters before the move to Sydney

Unfortunately, historians tend to disagree with you ...
The Bloods officially became the Swans in 1953 - much to the ire of old timers, who point out that the club's achievements under the revised moniker have been negligible.

If we were to revert back (!!) to the "The Bloods" moniker ... What will they say in 50 years ... Charlie was furious ???
