Sorry missed Willo - very good, expect the same as 2005 from him. Agree with you Liz.

Richards was good early. Has a tough body hits the ball and players hard and has good skills, quick hands. A very good addition to the side and his value will be seen when he plays with the full PREMIERSHIP SIDE.
Vogels - not a backman. Stumbles a lot and not quick on the rebound. Far better on the lead. Was no match for LLoyd
Centre half back maybe, but doubtful.Comment

Those of you who are about to sign off on Willo's retirement obituary, hold off for a while. Someone else has commented that he turned the ball over early - I didn't see this - but in the second quarter he was very very very good. It was largely down to him that the Swans were driving forward for most of the quarter and he turned on a couple of sublime pieces of skill.Comment

I went to the game.
Can't agree with comments on Richards. Played across Halfback and was one of our best, except for one attempt at a one handed take he was very clean with his hands and disposal, looks like a very handy utility rather than a star. I would have thought he would have had 20 or so possessions.
Willo looked fantastic
Goodes looked awesome, turn the clock back, he was moving beautfully, winning two on ones. Very rusty with ball handling though.
I am am putting some good money with the guy who put $100 on Amon Buchanan at 1000 to 1 for the Brownlow
I think comments on Vogels are un-fair. He was good in the hard part, keeping up with him (Lloyd), doesn't have the strength to bullock in marking contests so simply need to find a way to impede in the marking contest. Struggles with the ball below his ankles. He was respectable in the 1st half - eventually Lloyd got away from him.
Laidlaw I would expect to debut this year
Schmidt looked a little overweight (our only player that did) looked like he could do with another pre season - I doubt he will get that opportunity.
Grundy played a lot in our forward line without showing much
S&Don are @@@@@scared of Barry Hall
Craig Bolton - does this guy ever make a mistake? He's like the Cary Grant of footballers (not quite the looks)
I think many are mistaking Brabazon for Barlow who did some handy things and could develop
Nick Davis had a 'Vanilla Sky' physically he was on the ground, but actually he was 1000 kms away in a dentist waiting room reading a copy of Country Life (many teammates joined him later)
Malceski - looked better coming off half back, but suffers from early Nathan Buckley syndrome, squares himself up to the middle of the ground, runs straigth down the line and lets lose a 45 straight kick - to easy for the opposition to judge, and not to the advantage of his teammates. Needs to learn to mix his game up more
Spriggs bandwagon is more of a stroller.
Chambers - I think regular back up to Doyle & Jolly
Moore - early season conditions possible don't suit players like him, did nothing to suggest he will be anything more than a regular emergency
Over-all we looked rusty and not particularly interested, especially in last half. Of the New Guys only Vogels & Richards looked like they would be pressing for a regular senior berth.
Some of our guys looked a little lighter than last year (Hall, O'Keefe). We could do with finding a couple of running/ flanker type players over the pre -seasonYou don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby ZieglerComment

I suspect he could be another B2 type player. When he joined we all probably thought he'd be a fringe player but right from his first game with us he just went about his business with no fuss and now it's hard to imagine the team without him.Comment

Buchanan's main problem is being noticed often enough. But if continues to improve from last year's form, he must have an outside chance.
His biggest advantage is that he makes things happen and is often the guy that gets the ball to the player who kicks a goal.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

One thing that I noticed that hasn't been mentioned was our inability to get the ball beyond halfway from a kick-in. As most teams appear to be doing this year, the Dons flooded the midfield heavily. More often than not we'd kick-in to around the 50m arc and then look to handball to a guy under more pressure than the ball-carrier himself. (This seemed to be a regular occurence). The other option we took was to bomb it long to a contest where the Bombers had the numbers as a result of their flood.
Will be interesting to see what Roosy has up his sleeve regarding this problem come Round 1.
I too think the reviews on Vogels have been a tad harsh. In my view he looks MUCH more comfortable down back, and as a result more confident. He also appears to have bulked up a fair bit and from the time I got there (mid first quarter) he was never out-muscled.
Conversely, I think the reviews on O'Keefe have been a little generous. Though set-shots have never been his strength, he badly missed more than a couple you would expect him to make. I don't quite know how to describe the gimme he missed from in front in general play. (Perhaps somebody else with a better view of the incident can enlighten us?). Having said that, he did convert a set shot from 40+ and was, as usual, everywhere around the ground. His fitness is never an issue.
Goodes. Dominant. Looks set for a bumper year.
In general, we looked like a side with one eye (if not two!) on Round 1 Vs Essendon. With no injuries I think the coaching staff would think it was mission accomplished.
The highlight of the day came after the final siren. With most of his teamates already in the sheds enjoying a much deserved rest, B Hall stayed out on the ground mucking around and chatting to some young kids . . . at length. The guy is a credit to himself and the footy club. And the man who started it all, the Schneiderman . . . . .Comment
