I thought dispensation was going to be sought for Crouchy to play?

Doyle in and no Chambers? Is that a pointer to round 1? Also no Malceski.

Fosdike in presumably to get another game under his belt.

Surely theay can't be selecting Chambers over Doyle in round one?

I count only 18 in the proposed starting line-up. My guess is that the 'bench' will include 4 other senior players who need the extra work in preparation for R1.

Dempster will have to play if he is any chance for round 1.

I've read this too but I'm not sure why "dispensation" is required?

Of course, playing him in the reserves would hardly justify his recritment, would it?

I assume that "dispensation" is required as it has been interpreted by the AFL that playing healthy, fully prepared senior players in an unofficial pre-season match gives a team an unfair advantage going into the H&A.

Dispensation is required because AFL rules (possibly linked to the CBA with the Players' Association) dictate that senior players are meant to have a week's rest between the pre-season schedule and the AFL season-proper starting.

However, it is also recognised that where players have not been able to participate fully in the pre-season, due to injury or late availability, they may benefit more from playing this weekend than resting.

As I understand it, a club has to apply and the AFL has the right to say no. For instance, if the Swans were to apply for players like Ablett and Bolton to play this weekend, they would probably be turned down on the basis that these players have been available and have been playing for the entire pre-season schedule (other than the week's rest that the Swans decided upon). On the other hand, they would have a reasonable case for someone like Crouch, given that he's only played the one game so far this season.

Fair enough, but does this mean they needed to get dispensation for Fosdike, Doyle etc as well? I'm just not sure how it could work - it assumes you know - and the AFL knows - who your starting line-up for Round 1 is going to be. Seems unlikely scenario to me.

Assume Fosdike also needs games under his belt before H&A?

Just watched the reserves, It is a pre season round robin kind of thing.

Game one the swans kicked 10 goals to one point in 2Q's and in the second game 20 goals in 2Q's.

McVeigh, Doyle, Moore, Spriggs, Fosi, all played. No Dempster. Schmidt was hurt maybe ankle.

I thought Thornton and Brabazon looked OK.

                            From AFL site (much abbreviated):

                            Players available for match practice
                            4:37:28 PM Fri 24 March, 2006

The AFL wishes to advise the following players will be available to play this weekend (scheduled for a bye) for their Sydney Reserves due to interrupted or limited pre-season preparations.

Sydney - Ryan Brabazon, Stephen Doyle, Nic Fosdike, Heath Grundy, Matthew Laidlaw, Jarrad McVeigh, Jarred Moore, Tim Schmidt, David Spriggs, Kristin Thorton.
