    Media In Melbourne

I recently read an article on the foxsports website about the swans getting a hard time from the media in melbourne, i cant understand why the media in melbourne gives the swans such a hard time by making ridiclous comments such as 'we were lucky to win the flag' etc etc. Leo Barry said maybe its just a sydney-melbourne thing where both cities are competing in the AFL world. Yeah sure in the past(even still now) we have been time & time again been put down for our style of play but its won us a flag, surely thats enough for the media to shut thier mouths. Even the experts are giving us a mouthfull.

What more can the swans do to earn some respect?

They'll get over if the media-darlings St Kilda ever win a flag.

And more proof that they really have no idea about the Swans...

"Won their first pre-season match since Paul Roos took over as coach when they downed St Kilda."
        Source

        AND

"A heavy retirement list and a rule change could stop Sydney in its tracks after last season's premiership."
        Source

The first quote is way off the mark and its hilarious to see how this misnomer has grown. Sydney hasn't won a Wizard Cup / NAB match under Roos but it has won seevral pre-season matches. A clear case of journos not doing basic research.

I would hardly call the loss of one premiership player a "heavy retirement list". Maxfield and Nicks were bit players at best last year. Ball is the only loss of any note. And the rule changes are hardly going to "stop Sydney in its tracks".

I know the Melbourne media likes being negative about Sydney but some accuracy wouldn't go astray.

Whilst clearly demanding the respect we deserve, I also openly revel in giving us an underdog status. In the end, do we want the Melbourne media to crow over us, or for three or four premiership medallions around the players necks?

            [Takes deep breath...]

I have stopped worrying about what the Melbourne media rubbish on about some years now. When you have Walls, Sheahan, Hunt, Shaw et al as "respected" critics then you reap what you sow. Give me Martin Flanagan and game reporters ONLY and provide all 'opinion' writers and past players with cement boots.

Current players can be tolerated as they rarely write anything apart from 'the boys...' and can be dismissed as well, although they do add some amusing colour.

I like the bit in the Round 1 preview on the HS site (which is also a mini season preview) where it notes that Sydney were number one in the league last year for tackling and clearances but that rule changes may prevent a repeat.

I hadn't realised that there were new laws outlawing tackling or clearances!

Give them time - 2008 at the latest I'd say.

Don't get me started on the Melbourne press.....while I acknowledge that one shouldn't really give a toss about the journos, it continues to annoy me that this drivel is allowed to propagate. I thought history was written by the winners - if so, I want it acknowledged that the best side in the competition won the flag in '05, & they didn't steal it from the Saints or the Eagles or any other team that wasn't good enough when it counted.

I don't know what's worse, stupid journo's or people that take stupid journo's seriously.

haha yep that will definitely shut em up

ohh if anyone watched White Line Fever last night- when spida was saying about how the swans managed to win the premiership with the team they had and all other crap. Its almost as if to say we have a crap team & that we were lucky to win it etc
but seriously, we might not have heaps of big name stars but remember its a team sport so individual stars might make a little difference but having a consistent team that is willing to work hard for eachother is the key to how to win a premiership

then again you cant take the media seriously cos thats their job to look for little minor things & make big deals out of them, annoying as it is i think we just have to put up with it
We will mourn, but it will make us stronger....watch out AFL Sydney will be back in 2007 come September

If you were to place todays Tele season preview against the equivalents from the other four cities with AFL teams, I can almost guarantee each one will predict higher finishes from their local teams.

The media in every capital city will overrate their local team(s) and underrate interstate teams. Local bias sells papers, accurate examination of all teams chances does not. Face reality, newspaper editors will not let facts get in the way of circulation numbers.

IMO, every journo that writes a review / prediction will always have a home base - I don't believe there is any true impartiality.

When it comes to journo's prdictions before the season even commences, I always read them with great amusement, but they certainly never cause me any anguish. After all, the fact that they're being paid for their opinions or that they've seen many many more games than me doesn't make their prediction any more valid than mine! (just more lucrative!)

Again, IMO, save your anguish for when the actual games get started. I believe that once again the Swans will be on the rough end of polarised melbourne-centric reporting that will disparage all but the best of their play.

But even then, that suits me down to the ground. Let the Swans sneak up to steal a flag from under the noses of all the teams that 'should' win it, and I'll be a very happy camper!

                        Cheers!
