I think all of these observations are interesting, but I will reserve my judgement on how it affects football long-term for now. Temp football is actually about denying the opposition the football, and I think the new rules can have a positive impact on that for certain.

One thing that has already been noticed from last night, which I think will get worse, is the amount of flooding that was used. Essendon wasn't a great proponent of it in the past, but with the ball coming out of the back half so quick now, just watch all the team zone back en masse after a point. Actually works against the intentions of the rule, but that's what happens I guess. Only fatigue can prevent the flood from being an issue late in the game, but as players stamina builds through the year this will stop being an obstacle too.

I got excited for a moment and thought Walls had come out and banned himself from saying "tempo football".

These new rules are a load of crud and go against some fundamentals.

Ie. the flags being waved is ultra important. Only then has a score been registered, hence having to cross them to recind a score.

Thus to get a second free kick at goal the flags had to be waved, otherwise it was a free kick from the centre circle.

The umpires can't even apply the old rules. We had to play soccer against Essendon last night. Won't be long til they put nets up and have ballboys around the ground. Ole!
