On one occaision the ump was heard saying "Thats 20 seconds" when Lloyd was running in to kick, but the clock had passed 28 seconds....

What exactly is the rule? is it 30 seconds from when the mark is taken, or when the mark is awarded etc?

30 seconds is way too short. They should make it 45 at least. Gives the players a bit of a breather as well. With the fast kick ins coming into effect too, they'll prob need it.
I wonder if the 30s starts from when the umpire shows the mark, and the line to goal.
I will be a member again when I return.

Lloyd and Fev Stop the clock

        Link
MATTHEW Lloyd and Brendan Fevola both breached the new 30-second limit on kicking for goal in the opening round, but the AFL insists the controversial rule is working.
And this is fair to the other fwds in the comp, how?

So they breach the shot clock and nothing happens.

            Thanks Gandalf.

If it never finishes does it never start...?

Are you then going to see the ridiculous situation where if an opposition player is preparing for a shot at goal, you have a player jog right up behind him, ready to tackle if the ump calls play on?

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Well if the Ump calls play on, then they are free to be tackled.
Why bother having a rule if its not enforced

I have noticed this is standard AFL practice. They do it all the time. Say the opposite of what is obviously true in the hope that some people will believe. Sometimes I think they even believe it themselves. Hallmark of a dictatorship.

i think it is from the first moment the player is capable of taking the kick i.e. the ball has to be returned and in his possession and he's not receiving medical attention. i don't know if something like a lost boot would delay the start of the clock. as written previously, the mark has to be set by the umpire beforehand too.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

The shot clock is stupid...turns the footy game into a basketball game. Next thing you'll know they'll be getting the goal umpires to scream SLAM DUNK! after a goal or having an All Stars game where they get players to see who can boot the most fanciest goal.

Do I recall a certain game a couple of years ago when Sav Rocca playing for the Kangaroos deliberately punched a boundary throw in straight back out of bounds and was pinged. Unfortunately for him, the Swans were attacking and it was right next to the behind post. The full time siren went just as Darryn Cresswell was about to kick the goal. Swans win after the siren. Tough break for the 'roos, but the rule was there for the deliberate OOB.

Instead of all of this fuss, why don't they just stop the clock when the mark/free kick is taken and start it again when the ball is kicked by the player...or does that make too much sense?
