    Some good thoughts

Whilst we were beaten in every single department of the game on Saturday, I thought I should mention the players who did not look beaten.

This may surprise but in the first quarter there were only two players up with the tempo and who didn't look second rate compared to Essendon and who didn't trail their opponent by 15 to 20 metres in open play. They were Dempster, C. Bolton and LRT. Every single other Swan was following, often waaaaaaay behind.

Dempster, C. Bolton and LRT were the only players who were able to stay with their opponents from an athletic point of view and who got to contests at around the same time.

In the other half of the the field no Swans got free at all. Sensational manning up by the Bombers.

Interestingly we finally started to man up a little when the margin was 6 goals. And that's about where it stayed for the rest of the night.

On the positive we did run out the game as strongly as them (which is a downturn from last year, of course).

I truly hope that our lack of speed and accountability oin the first quarter was a first quarter of the season abberration and not a portent of a very, very slow team.

Alright I will get negative, Mathews was disgusting, Kirk was very poor, Crouch was nowhere, Jude had his head down and never seemed to see where the ball was, Ablett was lumering around like he was dizzy watching the ball go ping, ping, ping between Bombers but not able to get near it, Williams was another 15 metres back. I doubt if Bucky or Schneider made a telling tackle despite being second to the ball. I actually saw Nicky D trailling his opponent to a contest on the HBF by 30 metres and looking desperately to see who was coming from the back line to cover him. It was really, really awful. Lovatt was miles from Goodes for most of the night and it was only in the seco0nd half that Goodesy made anything of this. Till then he was just beaten to ball over and over.

    Praying

Can anyone spot the problem here? Was it three players or two?

Can't agree with most of your post though. Goodes was excellent except for Q1, IIRC Ablett got a fair bit of the ball.

Yes Willo looked slow, Crouch was probably worst on the ground, the amount of times his man marked 10-15 metres in the clear was ridiculous.

Yes but did absolutely nothing with it, and most of the time he seemed surprised he had it and rid himself of it as soon as he could.

I originally wrote two, but then I remembered Bolts who didn't do a lot with it but at least held his ground and was not beaten.

Goodes was well beaten by Lovatt

he was speedy gonzalez that night.

I think Teddy did his job.

No, actually Teddy didn't find any space in the first Quarter either.

Took great pack mark, though. Shame about the kick.

Goodes gave him too much latitude. But, he did beat Lovett, in one on one contests. Goodes was one of the better swans.

                i meant overall.

he wasn't shining, but he wasn't bottom of the pack either.
'average' seems to pass as 'good' for saturday.

Must have missed it sharpy - Schneider was awarded a free for a tackle - holding the ball.
And the man who started it, the Schneiderman, can kick his third for the quarter. And the swans are in the Grand Final!

Have only just got home from the mainland and was thinking about writing up how well Goodes played after quarter time. He was everywhere and confident and skilful. His opponent had his tongue hanging out trying to keep up with him. He won contests easily and saved our skin lots.
After reading the above posts I was quizzical about how I could have misread his game so badly. I thought he would have been in the running for Brownlow votes. At least he earned his kicks.

I've just been looking at the game again, and I agree with you Satch...Sharp9 cannot have been watching the game I was at, and that I taped, because what he said is not what I am seeing.

If you guys could read you'd see I was talking specifically about the first quarter. Yes
Goodes was good in the contest the point is that he was not accountable and followed his opponent who got several other uncontested possessions because of it.

Re read my post before commenting. And yes it was Andrew Lovett who got several loose ball gets and uncontested possessions whilst supposedly minding Goodes who hardly got near it in the first quarter.
