Whilst we were beaten in every single department of the game on Saturday, I thought I should mention the players who did not look beaten.
This may surprise but in the first quarter there were only two players up with the tempo and who didn't look second rate compared to Essendon and who didn't trail their opponent by 15 to 20 metres in open play. They were Dempster, C. Bolton and LRT. Every single other Swan was following, often waaaaaaay behind.
Dempster, C. Bolton and LRT were the only players who were able to stay with their opponents from an athletic point of view and who got to contests at around the same time.
In the other half of the the field no Swans got free at all. Sensational manning up by the Bombers.
Interestingly we finally started to man up a little when the margin was 6 goals. And that's about where it stayed for the rest of the night.
On the positive we did run out the game as strongly as them (which is a downturn from last year, of course).
I truly hope that our lack of speed and accountability oin the first quarter was a first quarter of the season abberration and not a portent of a very, very slow team.
Alright I will get negative, Mathews was disgusting, Kirk was very poor, Crouch was nowhere, Jude had his head down and never seemed to see where the ball was, Ablett was lumering around like he was dizzy watching the ball go ping, ping, ping between Bombers but not able to get near it, Williams was another 15 metres back. I doubt if Bucky or Schneider made a telling tackle despite being second to the ball. I actually saw Nicky D trailling his opponent to a contest on the HBF by 30 metres and looking desperately to see who was coming from the back line to cover him. It was really, really awful. Lovatt was miles from Goodes for most of the night and it was only in the seco0nd half that Goodesy made anything of this. Till then he was just beaten to ball over and over.
