    Dennis Carroll

Was just watching the 1987 game against the pies on fox footy and saw him play for the first time

what was he like as a skipper? and what position did he mainly play? comparisons to modern players? i'm just curious as I've heard his name a bit and how he was a pretty good servant and skipper of the club

    cheers

Dennis played most of his football at CHB, although he was named on the back flank in the team of the century (he was also one of the selectors of this team)

He played 219 games, between 1981 and 1993 and was captain between 1986 and 1992. He was one of the players that made the move from South Melbourne to Sydney

He never won a B&F but played state football for both VIC and NSW

He was Reserves Coach for a number of years and then Chairman of Selectors

He is now involved with a NSW Ford dealership (City Ford?) which is a team sponsor.

As a player I would put him in a similar light to Paul Roos, in that he wasnt as big as many of the CHFs he played against...He was a strong mark...an exceptional kick...and had plenty of dash

His dad played for StKilda, his uncle for Carlton
He had a cousin, Wayne, who also played for Sydney

I saw him towel up Sticks in a SOO match once. Until he got king-hit and carried off on a stretcher.

      Very good player.

Quality footballer who was a bit undersized for CHB, but did a good job there most times.

His brother Wayne was a waste of space.

Christmas was a good solid defender who could pull down the occasional screamer. He would personify the "bloods" spirit.

Dennis works as sales manager for City Ford

His young boy Ben plays for Cronulla and goes very well

Dennis was assistant coach of the St George Under 12 reps who won their division last year

A truely good bloke who cooks up a mean BBQ at Cronulla on Saturdays

I remember him as a dashing player off half back who played well above his height and weight and who was a terrific kick off both feet.

He is a thorough gentleman and a good contributor to local footy

who like Dave Murphy would never big note him self and is very

DC was frigging legend. Played his best footy at CHB,making Roos-like forays forward. He was a great captain, a NSWman & one of the frst true clubmen this club developed in Sydney. The fact he lives here & was one of thev first players to do so is to me indicative of this.

I still reckon we NEVER got over his injury in the 1986 finals, missing his experience & calm leadership when it mattered most against both Carlton & Fitzroy in finals that slipped away from us in the most traumatic of fashions. (Mention it Old Royboy & you WILL die I PROMISE!)

It is so weird watching footy from yesteryear. You realised how much the game has changed even from 20 years ago. The small run-down suburban ground, the tight shorts, the lack of flooding or overall defensive pressure on the guy with the ball, players willingly kicking to contests.

Even the Cheer Squads wearing their duffle coats using their paper floggers behind the goals led me to become nostalgic about years gone by. To be honest I do NOT miss travelling to feral Vic Park with its seats with black mossy goo growing under them one bit!

Correction there mate. "Christmas" was actually his brother Wayne.

Dennis was merely refered to as 'DC'.

Over rated footballer who started off on the wing, but wasn't strong enough at the contests. Moved to the HB line for the same reasons. Dont know that he was ever the designated CHB. My memory is that he was HBF and I went to every game in Melbourne.

Good at running off the half back line taking the handpass and kicking long. I would reckon with the need for good, strong hard tackling and general hardness in today's game that he would struggle to keep up. Best called an old fashioned half back.

The fact that he didn't win a B&F says something for such a so called lauded player. Not genuine comes to mind. Wonder what his tackle count was?

How dare anyone mention him in the same breath as Paul Roos.

According to Jim Main, Wayne was Dennis' cousin, and a handy footballer. 57 goals in 56 games.

I would suggest the games you went to in Melbourne were very different from the ones I went to. Actually the description you give reminds me a little more of Mark Browning

Wayne (Christmas Carol) is Denis?s cousin.
But Wayne did have a brother who also played with the Swans in the early 80s but I cannot remember his name.(Might be Greg) He may have only played 2nds.
They came from around the Wagga area. Wayne was a fantastic high mark who returned to Wagga after playing with the Swans. Had his jaw broken by a king hit in a Grand Final playing with the Wagga Tigers.
                            Where's the remote?
