    Directive to the cheer squad

Don't hand the ball back to the oppossition too quickly after a point! With the new rule in place, try to hold up the kick-in guy by waiting a few seconds or something.

I think it was during either the 2nd or 3rd quarter when a cheer squad member who cleanly marked a behind passed the ball to an Essendon defender, they were able to exploit that our guys hadn't quite marked them up.

    Any thoughts?

I thought there was a bucket of balls next to the posts anyway??

Yeah, but he got the ball pretty much instantly rather than taking a few seconds to pick up a ball.

Make more noise and call out nasty names to distract the kick in player.

A cheer squad member took a clean mark?!?!?

There is supposed to be, but I guess anything is worth a try.

How about retain the ball and next time a point is kicked throw it out to the player just as they get the ball out of the ball box. The confusion could cost several valuable seconds.

'specially if you smack him upside the head with a decent spear pass......
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

And take sling-shots and fire marbles/ball bearings at the Port players.

Actually it's a soft esky type bag. A guy sits beside it on a stool.

Also a security watches the ball like a hawk exuding evil thoughts against anyone who retains the ball an instant longer than necessary. Trying to hit the goal ump is a no-no these days too - can get you thrown out.

Wouldn't it work well to throw the ball back onto the field, so that if the player grabbed a ball from the bucket, the other ball would be loose in the field of play meaning play couldn't restart until one ball was removed???

Nice work Mike. I think you have found the appropriate strategy. Expect to see some serious ball tossing action from the cheersquadon Sunday.

In theory I agree. But in practise it is a risky proposition, given how visible we are to security the AFL & both clubs. We CAN & will be fined for throwing the ball away. Or at least security will have a yarn to the person not giving the ball back quick enough.

I normally tell people to just hold back from chucking it straight back to the full back. But these days I think they have a box of footies right behind the goal umpire. They just pick one & off the full-back goes.

Those footies certainly come flying in at the rate of knots at times. I do recall one particular listee getting a kick from Jason Ball straight in the face. She was reading the Record when he was shooting for go, so I'm not as sympathetic as you would think.
