    The Carrara Roos?

Sounds better than the Gold Coast Kangaroos. Or maybe they could just call themselves the Northern Kangaroos? I didnt realise that this was such a hot topic until just now at the Herald Sun website. We dont get much news on TV about AFL other than Sydney. Or maybe I've not had the time to watch uch news this week.

It seems like a formaility in the years ahead...

The Northern Kangaroos for the Gold Coast and Western Bulldogs for the 2nd Sydney team...they wouldn't even need to change their name!
    Swannies for life!

On Sunday on ABC radio Jeff Kennett said that the AFL was looking at two Melb teams relocating to those two areas within a few years. First time I had heard anything definite.

BTW the suspicion has been that the Western Bulldogs changed their name a few years ago with a view to eventually moving to the west of Sydney. Only time will tell.

I was on the Coast for the recent practise match against Richmond and was impressed at the ground crowd etc etc. There are so many expats from the south who would combine together to support a composite Gold Coast side that I do NOT want North going up there and destroying things up there.

The locals will identify with a club called Southport Sharks AFC, even if they barrack against them once a year when their team comes up. But they will not barrack for the Glod Coast Kangaroos, especially if they show the same commitment & identification with the region that they did in Sydney & Canberra.

North are merely out to get as much cash out of people as they can. THe AFL should be a little bit more reticent to assist them if the club does not hold any plans with moving up there in the long term.

The game cannot afford North Melbourne moving where the cash incentives are. I'd rather keep North in Canberra for the matches they have & have a new team called the Southport Sharks in the league.

With the Titans starting up next season, the AFL HAS to step into the area proprly and get a foothold into the local community before they are lost to the code.

Can't agree with this JF, if that were the case the Mustangs or whatever they were called wouldn't have folded a few years back. I think that the kangaroos or someone has to move there as you said, but I think for the GC to be won over to League, it would have happened with their last NRL team if it was going to happen.

Its kinda funny they're all so Gold Coast focussed. Its a tourist haven. People coming and going for the most part. The success of the Cowboys 2 hours further north says something.

I remember doing an east coast tour with a band and the big show at the Gold Coast landed less than 30 people there. Scratch it.

Its highly annoying that now the AFL props these other clubs and my side got moved from Melbourne back in 1982

I appreciate the Sydney comment, but have the Roos been that bad with Canberra? I thought that general feedback from those in the region was they had been alright with developing the game down there.

They've been pretty good, in a head-up-bum dominated market place. The Brumbies are huge (a ticket to a corporate box to see the Bumbies is a sign of your status within the public service) and the Raiders have been here long enough to be a solid part of the place. The Roos put on plenty of clinics and have a general presence around the place around game times. I think a reserves side here would be a good idea (though I imagine the $ would be a factor), maybe play 5 games a year here and have some sort of full time office - then I think they could make a go of it. There are plenty of footy supporters here, but they would need to capture the hearts of nearly all of them to be financial viable full-time in the Territory.

Prediction - Carlton to merge with the Kangaroos, Southport to get the spare licence.

I assume you mean by air, because Townsville is 1600 kms north of Brisbane. I lived there for three years, it's like being in a different country.

Disagree GS14. There is such a groundswell of apathy & dislike amongst people in SEQ to the big business Broncos that people are looking at the Titans to become 'the people's team'. In lieu of all the former GC NRL clubs going under, I think everyone will be hell-belt on making sure the new club DOES work. They are even building a whizz-bang kick-arse new rectangled stadium at Robina for them. So unlike the Giants Seagulls & Titans, I think this club will be a huge success, with a lot of disillusioned former Broncos fans making the trip down in the car or Brisbane local Citytrain service.

I saw with my own eyes how much support there is for the game these days on the Gold Coast. It is no longer JUST holiday-makeers & retired Victorians living there, it is young families, it is people wanting a new life in the sun.

I seriously doubt that the locals will come and watch North play games up there. But they will watch a local Gold Coast team, even if they may still barrack against them once a year.
