My Top Five Sydney - Carlton Matches

1) Rd 13, 1996 - Carlton were the reigning premier with an imposing home record at Optus. We were the new kids on the block. Match was a tight tussle which went toe for toe the whole game. Plugger was well held but OB came to the rescue kicking a bag.

2) Rd 8, 1995 - Carlton were undefeated and we weren't anything special. Plugga lit up the night taking Sos to the cleaners. Everything went right as we walloped them by 72 points.

3) Rd 6, 1987 - Another Friday Night Special with Warwick Capper leading the charge. Tight game the whole night but we never we headed and squeaked away with it by 7 points.

4) Rd 1, 1990 - Won a game we never should have with a Barry Mitchell snap right at the death to steal it. At half-time we were down by 45 points.

5) Rd 6, 1997 - Roles were reversed as we were the big boys and gave them a hiding from start to finish. winning by 59 points.

All of these are before I started going to games!! (rd 11 1997)

My favourite is probably Tadhg Kennelly's debut - IIRC Carlton were near the top of the ladder, and we upset them nicely that day.

My first game of AFL I ever went to and the night I fell in love with Aussie Rules Football (and maybe with Australia too). A life changing experience!

Round 1 1990 was the first time I saw the Swans win at PP.

I went to my first game there in '72 and I believe they hadn't won there since '65.

It was one of the most brilliant comebacks I've ever seen - I still have it on VHS.

10 points to anyone who can name someone who debuted and kicked 5 that day.

And it wasnt Paul Kelly who did debut.

My favourites are:

1) Rd 5, 1992 - Dad & I haven't been to the footy as much in recent years and we decide to go to the Princes Park game, which is usually a shocking venue, and the Swans are 1-3 while Carlton are 3-1. Bayes dominates at CHB and destroys Kernahan, the Swans kick away with a 5 goal to 1 second quarter, to win by 21 points. One of only 3 games we won that year.

2) Rd 1, 2001 - First game I go to in Sydney with Mrs Bloods, at Telstra Stadium, a western trek at night, and Roos's first game as proper coach. Swans destroy Carlton by 74 points.

3) Rd 8, 1995 - One of only two losses for Carlton that year, 9 goals second quarter and Plugger kicks 8.

4) Rd 13, 1996 - Great win by 11 points against reining premiers at their home ground with an awesome final quarter and 6 goals to O'Brien while Silvagni had Plugger in a sleeper hold or figure four leglock for much of the game (but of course no free kicks).

5) Rd19, 1982 - Swans have an awesome second half, kicking 13 goals to 6 to down the premiers and stay in touch with the five.

(People may say how do I remember this game so long ago and I only remember it vaguely. However, I do recall it was a big year with the name change to Sydney, the night flag and it seemed like the beginning of a lot of promise after so little in the past. Fantastic win, only to be soured by a thumping against Hawthorn the following week, and then an abysmal loss to Richmond a week after when we led 8-3 to 0-3 at qtr time! And I do recall that one! )

There were some sweet tussles in at Princes Park in the early 90s...

A draw, where it see-sawed all day and Gavin McMahon I think it was kicked out on the full coming along the wing for the last play of the day.

And one game where Barry Mitchell (scumbag moneybags a$$hole) booted one with a snap to take the lead and win with minutes to go.

Remember that one really well, but I've never seen it. We'd been to the first two home games, a shocker against Freo (following on from the thumping from the Crows) and a scratchy win against the 'Pies and was busy with the newborn son that I'd lost touch with what had been happening from there on. From memory we were coming off three or four 40+ point wins against poor opposition. We'd been up on the Northern Beaches all day and the drive back timed perfectly with the last quarter on the wireless. I can't remember being more excited listening to a game on the radio. This game announced our return from the dead more than any other. Then came the Geelong game the following week............

IIRC wasn't there a year when we were called "The Swans" rather than South Melbourne or Sydney? I'm pretty sure it was either 82 or 83.

LOL, I don't think I can even attempt to top that Liz.

I remember that night really well. I had these painfully arrogant Carlton supporters in their Grog Squad right next to me. They got the @@@@s when I started mouthing off at Barry Mitchell during the reserves. To my surprise Bangers started mouthing off at me back, which shows how I was rattling him.

I brought rugby league supporters to their first AFL game that night. The crowd was a then massive 25000, with many people coming out of disgust at the Super League war in RL. We had these guys dressed up in Shirts with the letters all spelling out "Sir Tony". I recall that night a guy in a suit tried to start chants but kept of going "Give us an S, Give us a Y, give us an N". We all pissed ourself laughing each time he stuffed up.

We absolutely HAMMERED the Blues. After mouthing off all night about how they didn't respect Sydney fans & about how crap we all were, the Carlton Grog Squad poms started going the biff. They simply could NOT handle it! One guy held one of our lot down whilst other cowards roughed him up a bit. But they were completely slayed by Hooligan Warrior of Death Beaussie, who sent a guy to the floor with a choice blow to the head.

I recall the scene after the game. Everyone streamed onto the ground as if we had just won the flag. A few of us were running around the centre of the ground waving our flags furiously. It looked amzing on TV with the cameras just centring on everyone going wild out on the ground.

This was the night I first saw with my own eyes the potential that was in our footy club. It was just an awesome evening, especially beating opponents who were so smug and contemptuous at the time that it wasn't funny.
