Victorian membership - value for money?

I hadn't really given this much thought before, but after chatting to members of Victorian clubs the cost of this seems rather steep.

You pay much the same cost but see less than half the games.

The average cost per game is about $20, which is the same price of a ticket.

So what's the benefit?

GF ticket preference, and your money goes mainly to the club, not the league.

In wondered if the two games, by kangas and Bulldogs that should be played in Melb actually were, would our Vic membership costs go up?

The main problem I have with this is the same one that always seems to be there - we have to pay more money for clubs so they can support high-income footballers. I don't really understand why the Victorian membership cost isn't closer to half what it is.

The standard Victorian Season Ticket is $105.00 for an Adult.

That comes in at $17.50 per game and a saving of $1.00 per game off GA.

Without looking at all the other Melbourne clubs websites this is standard ($1.00 off per game) for all other season ticket catergories for the Melbourne clubs.

So in answer to your question, there is no difference and therefore value for money.

Are you aware that GA to all games is now $18.50?

With out knowing all the issues surronding what the clubs can do with membership, I would suggest that the AFL set what discount is allowed on the standard season ticket and that is $1.00 per game for all clubs.

Yes, that's sort of my point. It costs about $20 to enter off the street and it costs $20 with a membership card. So there is little benefit except for the nice feeling of directly supporting the club. The downside is that if you can't make a game or two for whatever reason, you have thrown your money away.

The reason I raised it is that I didn't realise how cheap other club memberships were. One of the guys at work is a Hawthorn member, it costs basically the same and there are more than twice as many games in Melbourne.

what about the fact that you are a member of the club you love.

your money is supporting them, regardless whether it goes to the players or not.


there may be know obvious benefits as far as the cost goes But for me being a member shows a level of committment to the club, plus last year i got a guaranteed grand final ticket (in ripper seats too).

I agree, and have thought the same thing for a few years now.

Miss one game and you're out of pocket.

Supporting your club is great, but most people expect something in return.
Not many people out there who donate thier money to the club.
As close as we come is raffles etc.

But I suppose Vic based supporters are still considered 'supplementary supporters' to an extent

This "supporting your club" is a little bit of a red herring. We can still support our club without being short changed. As CtS says, it's nice to get a little something in return (beside a cap).

I guess that's one thing that isn't an option for Melbourne members compared to Sydney. If you can't make a game in Sydney, you can put your seat up for resale, and if sold you get credit towards your membership for the following year. So while you are not guaranteed to not be out of pocket, you at least have a chance to get something back.

I'm happy to support the club, but the real problem for me is Geelong. It's so hard to get a seat - and I don't want to stand all afternoon - that in effect I put it down as a donation to the club.
And what are the membership costs for Hawthorn etc?

I just checked and I think it's the same price per game, but naturally that makes it double the cost.

If you live in Melbourne and love your footy get an AFL membership. You can go to 30+ games a year for $295. I love going to other games, especially as the Bloodboys only play down here 6 times a year at best. Also, with an AFL membership being a swans supporter you are almost guaranteed a good seat at every game down here. Level 1 at telstra dome every game and right down the bottom on the wing every game at the g. If you go to at least 15 games a year it is well worth it.

Ooh - that's a good idea. Thanks, I might consider that (perhaps this year, perhaps next).
