exactly - you only need to win by a point - that is all that matters.

Its not pretty and we would all prefer that they played flowing footy, kicking backwards drives me nuts - but I guess if thats the only option they have when the other side floods then so be it.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

Probably not, but the ignorant Carlton supporters around us reckon it was all Sydney's fault that the game was ugly. WE WEREN"T THE TEAM WITH 18 MEN IN DEFENCE FOR MOST OF THE NIGHT!!!

"long long time" on there agreeswith me (about the 5th post down). They can't all blame us, evident by the lack of the Blues supporters being on here since the game. I think they may be hiding in embarrassment.

Pagan's Paddock is alive and well at Carlton with avengence. It is that that lost the game for Carlton, not our chip kicking because they wouldn't man up.

Fevola had to rely on Swan mistakes for the most part of the game to get the ball.

Carlton's uber flood was a major factor, but our reluctance to go forward certainly contributed.

Brisbane were woeful, Roos were woeful, Port were woeful, Geelong were woeful. It was not a nice weekend of footy with so many lopsided games IMO.

At least the Swans/Blues ended up being a bit of a contest. I'd rather see a tight game than a blowout. I was surprised Carlton stayed off us when we were kicking it about. A bit of pressure could have turned it over and the result would have been different. The Blues should be ashamed of themselves and their fans the same for letting the game go that way.

As Roos said in his press conference...come September no one will remember how you got the 4 pts just that you did!

Sorry, for saying this, but I found the whole game very boring and unexciting. With the exception of the 1st Q, the whole thing was unwatchable. Where's the entertaining value? If this is where the game is going the fan base might decrease sooner than you think.

I thought so too. I found it to be a very frustrating and crappy game to watch.

Absolutely, especially given the skills levels of both sides.

There is no question that when the Swans play without confidence, as they did on Saturday & as they did often early last year, then our style of footy is agonising to watch. But Roos would argue that this is our game plan being poorly executed. When we play the same game plan with confidence we can have tremendous games of hard fought contested football - the two finals games vs WCE were two of the best I've ever witnessed, between two highly skilled committed passionate football teams.

Where does the confidence come from? God knows but geez I hope we find it soon!

I didn't think either of those games were particularly high skilled. Few goals and lots of tackles is not my definition of a highly skilled spectacle. They were exciting because they were close.

Is that really that surprising though?

when you're struggling, you go into survival mode. You weigh up the options. Obviously we are down on confidence at the moment, and our skills etc are not quite up to the standard we'd all like. You're trying to protect a lead, look ahead of you and see a sea of players. What do you do? If you don't have the confidence in yourself to kick accurately, and also in your teammates to take a contested mark, then you're going to go with the safe option, right? Serves the opposition right if they can't man up and force a contest.

Seeing an attractive style of football is nice, but for me it is merely a bonus. If you can win AND look good doing it, that's great. However, if we don't have the confidence or the form, or whatever, to be able to achieve that, I would rather see us doing whatever it takes to get a win. Doing otherwise is like unnecessarily taking a handicap into a game.

The club's job is not to entertain us. It is their job to do whatever is possible within the constraints of the laws of the game to win.

As a postscript, this of course is not tied into my support for the club. I support the club because it is my club. Simple as that. I go to games, not EXPECTING either wins or entertainment. Some days I get neither.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....
