Yet to play a top 8 side

Similar to last year I think, we are getting beaten by the poorer sides in the comp. Do the players rise for the bigger occassions? Are we just plain crap starters? Are we just having the biggest hangover ever?

I never really thought about that. hmm well I've got a feeling the Swans have had very big heads the last few weeks, probably becuase people except the swans to kill the teams we have played & i reckon the swans might be going into the game with a little too much confidence

Round 1 was a case of a crap start, hangover...no way, genuinely think that losing stuey & bally was a huge loss & I think that the swans just need a reality check because at the moment, like kirky said- we aren't playing a consistent 120 minutes of footy

It's annoying but I think it is true that they rise for the big occassions- so if that is the case- we will win this week against geelong
We will mourn, but it will make us stronger....watch out AFL Sydney will be back in 2007 come September

If its the same as last year then how can it be a premiership hangover?

I think its best to wait for a few more weeks yet before we start to label the team.

It is similar to last year - why? Are we just slow starters, or is there a different reason this year? I have no labels.

Well truth be known, I cant remember a 'good' start under Roos. And the 'good' starts that I can remember (like the four or five in a row under Eade some years back) always ended in poor finishes.

I prefer to wait and see what happens. It is a long year, and injuries and changes to game plans do strange things to a team's form.

Financial advisors always cover their arses by saying the historical performance of a fund is no indicator of its future performance. Similarly, footy teams' season to season performance is not submartingale. They go up and then they go down. In the good old days, power teams like Carlton, Collingwood and Hawthorn could sustain their performance because there was no draft. In the more recent past, the Lions were able to stay at their peak longer because their list was a combination of the best of two sides.

Now, do some fundamental analysis on the Swans as at April 2006. Forget that we won the flag last year, look at our list, look at our performance in the first four games, consider the depth of our reserves and ask the question 'what reasons do I have to expect that this team can win the 2006 premiership'.

Result: Our 2005 success was drawn from a burning desire, a great coach, a relatively injury free list, a group of good average players peaking together and playing for each other. Oh yeah, and four goals from Davis in the Geelong final. This view does not devalue the achievement - if anything it increases its value.

Twelve months on the motivation is less (Roos has told our core players that they can live for a while on credit and Kirk's weekly Optus game summaries smack of insincerity). Our relatively old list of core players is one year older and a key player is gone. We've been hit harder by injury already and we've been arse rooted by the new rules.

If the Sydney Swans Footy club was a stock, a wise investor would have cashed in when the siren sounded last year. Of course, I did my best to convince myself that because we paid a handsome dividend last year, we would do the same again this year.

I think I might have been deluding myself. Of course, I'll still hang on to the stock...

There's this myth that Brisbane dominated the competition for the three years of their premiership. They didn't - Port Adelaide did. The Lions dominated the finals (starting from a pretty good position).

Last year the Swans did manage to find something special. It may be unlikely that they can do it again this year. But I think the slow start is partly deliberate by the fitness staff. What worries me is that the Swans planned on building towards the end of the season. Good idea. I also think that Roos hadn't factored in the lack of motivation and the big-headedness that the team would bring to this season. If they had been trying, they would have at least one more win by now.

By the time they realise that they are going to have to go back to working if they want to go back to winning the season may have passed them by.

2005: We were underrated by everybody. Opposition coaches got arrogant. We flew under the radar and ... BOOM!

2006: People rate us now. Opposition coaches do their homework on us more carefully than they did last year. Result - we drop one or two games.

We will improve, but I shouldn't worry. We always have crap starts.
                          2005: 2-4 after 6 rounds (3 losses in a row rounds 2 to 4)
                          2004: 3-5 after 8 rounds (4 losses in a row rounds 5 to 8)
                          2003: 1-3 after 4 rounds (3 losses in a row rounds 2 to 4)

The last season we had a decent start in was 2002. Look what happened that year.

I really don't think we should be worrying about external forces...
