Was Andrew Schauble given a fair chance?

Andrew only played 4 games in 2005; Rd 6,7,8 then 2 weeks in Canberra and then his final appearance at AFL level in Rd 11, a victory over Carlton. Lance Whitnall touched Andrew up in Rd 11, then Andrew spent most of the game off the ground (although he still managed to do a few memorable things, took an absolute screamer) and was sent back to Canberra for the rest of the year before retiring at the end of the 2005 season aged 28.

Do you think the club did the right thing in 2005 by a former club champion?

Impossible to know unless you are Paul Roos or Andrew Schauble.

I thought he was not looking too flash at all, particularly in terms of speed.

I'm not sure if he himself thought he still "had it" to play in the AFL, but I wasn't too shocked by his omissions in the last half of the 2006.

A lot of the guys this year haven't looked too flash at all, including in speed. Roos has said that certain players have earnt credits and are being given an extended chance- surely Andrew should have earnt credits over the years? Roos made Maxfield an automatic selection, despite not looking too great or quick last year, and even said in the media later in the year that if he asked to play Roos would put him straight back in to the first 22.

The issue with Schauble sure is as interesting one. People can say that he was so and did not suit our 'running-out-of-defence' game plan. But then they put LRT there who would arguably be more immobile and worse kick than him. So that argument can be pretty much blown out of the water.

I know Schauble had a lot of back problems. I recall asking him continously when he'd be back. It got to the point that he would start grinning ruefully when he said "a couple of weeks mate". I thought to myself "there is something going on behind the scenes that i don't know about".

We will nhever really know why Schauble's career was finished as it did. It is a bad sad really. But I trust those who DO know did make the right decision.

Unfortunately his future in radio looks about as bright as his footy career last year.

Me thinks that Roosey has shares in a "just for men" hair dye company his hair gets darker by the week!

Shaubs is one of life's good guys. Sad his career ended the way it did - but at least he didnt persist and decided to move on with the next phase of his life.

I think that given the fact that we ended up winning the premiership without him , you can't really go and say that we should have put him back in to the side - so I don't think he ws unfairly treated there. You can't just put someone back in to the side because they are a former club champion. Giving away places in teams to players based on sentiment does not work (please take note Cricket Australia). I don't know the full story on why he retired so early, so maybe we were harsh to him. But to me, he just looked like a player who was not up to it anymore in his last couple of games. Given the fact that he did not look elsewhere to resurrect his career (28 ain't that old) it seems he would be saying that he also felt that he was not up to it anymore.
