    Same Old Same Old

    What is striking to me about our efforts to date this year is that we seem to be struggling in essentially exactly the same areas we were last year at this time, to wit:
    - a lack of forward line structure (too Hall-centric, no crumbers at the fall of the ball, leading too wide)
    - getting smashed at the clearances
    - lack of goal shooting accuracy
    - slow to react to rule changes
    - lack of confidence & leadership generally
    - too slow to move the ball forward

    I've got no idea whether this is good news (we got better didn't we?) or bad news (will we ever learn?) but it seemed noteworthy to me. There is a sense of groundhog day about a lot of the posts on here in any event.

      These are not the attributes you'd expect from a premiership team.

      The main difference between this year and our previous slow starts, is that in 2006 we are defending champions. I think as fans we are entitled to expect more.

      There appears to be very little aura surrounding our side for other teams which is worrying.

          Mike Sheahan observed in On the Couch that we looked very good when were a few goals down and we ran the ball, kicked goals and looked dangerous. Then we reverted back to the hold the ball, kick sideways, go nowhere approach.

          I think it's fairly clear this approach does not work unless we are already in control of the game.

          This year reminds me a lot of 2004. We came off a good year in 2003, getting under everyone's guard, and now teams are more wary of us, and playing tighter football against us, so we have frozen up and are playing terrible football trying to be safe and being too scare to err.

          I have no doubt we will get better but as for how much it's anyone's guess. We are such a Jeckyll and Hyde team that we could do anything and finish anywhere from top 4 to outside the 8.
          Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

              It was bloody exciting too. How big was the roar from the crowd when Davo kicked that goal (which I noticed did not get a nomination for goal of the year)? THAT is exciting football!
              I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline

                  Couldn't agree more.

                  I saw the Drummoyne Tigers narrowly go down to the St George Crows on Saturday followed by the Swannies and the Dees and both games were fantastic. Some tight exciting footy, too bad about the results though!
