I get sick and tired hearing from people saying footy is not as good as it used to be. They should take a look at some FOX footy games from the seventies and eighties. Seemingly no strategy. Kick to a pack! Kick it close to the boundary line so you don't risk it coming back the other way! The fullback kicked out no matter what his ability! Always kicked it out to the ruckmen. Disposal abysmal on many occasions, particulary the drop kick when it was still in vogue. You could hide duds on the back flank or the back pocket. Played on grounds that were nothing more than a stinking bog where the footy was so heavy they were lucky to kick it twenty metres.
Unfortunately your Sam Newmans et al, remember the odd good game, or the odd passage of play which has a good mark or a decent disposal. It certainly wasn't the norm! Saw the Richmond V Geelong grand final of the 60's a few months ago, a final hailed as the definition of Aussie Rules footy, and I couldn't believe the lack skill among many of those participating.
I say footy is better than it ever has been but I do like to see good, hard, physical, accountable footy like the Swannies played last year in particular. The bulldogs run and gun style where no one else touches thye ball leaves me a bit cold.
