Well I was going to put up a thread on the match but this thread seems to have covered it pretty well.
Howling wind and rain throughout the match made it tough going for the players but I was impressed by some of the swans youngsters. A lot of mention has been made of Earl Shaw as a ruckman of the future but I was equally impressed by the efforts of Sam Rowe he already has a good build for a ruckman and he covered plenty of territory and took some nice grabs.
Talking about good grabs there was one player who took about 7 fine marks considering the conditions, it took me a while to pick up his number due to the poor conditions but it was Paul Currie he certainly has the makings of a KPP of the future and he is already solidly built.
As for the players close to senior selection Willoughby Spriggs Bevan and Vogels all played key roles along with the youngsters Phillips and Jonathon Simpkin wearing Powells old number, he along with Willougbhy were the pick of the midfielders in my opinion.
Grundy started well but overall was well held by the tigers defence, did not spot Schmidt or Garrubba and Wall while he played well has a long way to go before his body is up to the rigors of senior footy.
That about sums it up I am happy to answer any specific questions if anyone has any. cheers Ian
Thanks for the report Ian. I agree with your assessment of Currie, he was looking very good in PS before he got injured. Just a few questions:
- Where did Vogels play this week? I noticed he kicked a few goals so he must have played forward at some stage but did he play in defence as well?
- Was Phillips specifically playing as a crumber or did he have time in the middle?
- How did you see Kieran Jack's game?
- How much time did Shaw play (approx.)

Vogels played in defence in the first half then they switched him forward after half time to me he seems to be equally at home in defence or attack but in the seniors I would be tempted to play him at fullback remembering he did quite a good job on Matthew Lloyd in the Nth Sydney game.
With the rain it was hard to tell at times who was playing where but I had the binoculars on the midfield quite a bit and Phillips did not seem to be there so I suspect he was mainly up forward.
Jack was playing on the Tigers captain coach who has been in their best 2 or 3 players in the matches so far but he was hardly sighted yesterday so Jack certainly did his job well.
Shaw and Sam Rowe were interchanging every 15 minutes or thereabouts they dominated the ruck but Tigers lack a couple of really tall players so it is hard to guage just how good they are. cheers Ian
Seems like happy news all around (tempered by the moderate opposition), especially with the big rookies, who are always speculative.
Re: Phillips. Official stats suggested that at the time he was drafted he was 67kg, and now the official Swans website (whatever that's worth) has him at 69kg. Fantastic that he's booting a heap of goals in the twos. We like goals. He's putting his name front & centre to get a senior list promotion next year. (Which, with few retirees and many rookie listers, are going to be bloody hard to come by.) But 67/69kg makes Mattie Lappin look like a sumo wrestler. Surely at his weight he couldn't get picked until 2007 at earliest? Or do the stats lie and he looks bulky enough to handle himself with Lance Whitnall bearing down (or sitting down) on him?
A question for the stats nerds: who is the lightest current AFL player (who gets a game on a fairly regular basis)?

Don't know if he is the lightest, but the Dees' site lists Davey at 67kgs and a couple of cm taller than Phillips.
That suggests that physique may not be a complete barrier. At that size, though, one has to be very quick and have skills to match. It's hard to tell whether Phillips' pace is quite at the Davey level but he is certainly very nippy. And his skills look sharp enough too - his kicking has decent penetration, I've seen him take marks in traffic, and his hands are reasonably clean.
