Round 24: what's been going on.

Now that the site is back, I might as well start a thread.

I must say that I enjoyed the Saints getting up over Carlton. Hopefully Fremantle can now finish off their season. While I suppose many people will be lauding the effort of Carlton, for getting close with so many players out, I have a bit of a different view. That is, if they can field a competitive side with such a long injury list, then that to me is a demonstration of how badly they might be rorting the salary cap.

Though if they are knocked out, then the Victorian AFL media might go all in on the fairytale Hawks. Which is a prospect that doesn't appeal to me at all: even if I do sorta admire the job that Sam Mitchell has done.

Seems like there's been a bit of everything this round, from meaningless dead-rubber blow outs to intrigue at the bottom end of the top 8. I am enjoying the will they/won't they tension as position 8 hangs on the last game.

It was an enjoyable night at the SCG too last night. A strong win even with the managed players and I did not begrudge a few junk time opposition goals, as everyone needed a rest - a warm night too! Blakey was terrific and a super game from Roberts not far behind him.

So, Carlton have survived. Can't really see them beating Brisbane at the Gabba, though.
Fremantle fans must be a bit numb, after looking some sort of premiership threat for most of the season.

Was disappointed the Giants were so poor against the Fairypuppies today - but hope they play as poorly in a fortnight's time (unlikely I know given they will have some players back).

I remember a few weeks somewhere people predicting a threepeat of Fremantle flags, such was the confidence. They really did fall into a whole at the end of the season.

i think the site went down during my one visit to a live game this year, against Brisbane. Maybe the footy gods are telling me to stay put in Lennox Head and be a beach bum for life.

I forgot to mention that Jordan Dawson spent a long time hugging and chatting with the Swans players post-game, the other Adelaide players were almost off the ground when he caught up. There may be some supporter animosity around how he left the Swans but from what I saw, that most certainly isn't the case with his ex-teammates.

Lizard, Errol, Chad and Heeney all named All Australian. I personally find it silly the guy who’s been playing midfield all year gets shoved onto a half forward flank as Heeney did, but anyhoo.

Also, the decision to pull Heeney from the last game was right but probably cost him the Coaches award. He was in the lead at the end of round 23, and only finished five behind Daicos. A half decent game would have given him the prize. I think the coaches award matters more than the Brownlow so a bit disappointed for him, but oh well, a Norm Smith is better so who cares.

Hearing commentary on SEN today whether Geelong deserve a home final at Kardinia Park (instead of the MCG) should they qualify to do so. In the past they've done so when playing non Vic teams. Not sure if this applies for PF (we did play them at the MCG in 2016 PF,,,,,and won!). Likewise, whether GWS are better off playing their home finals at the SCG, particularly if it's the PF, given their low home ground capacity. It's been alleged we are against that notion (apparently John Ralph has reported this, but can't find article).

IMO, Geelong should play all their home finals at the MCG period. It is the biggest ground in Vic (Australia) and this rule SHOULD be consistent, rather than fit for purpose which is unfair to non Vic teams. The Dogs have been made to play their home final against the Hawks at the MCG, rather than at the Docklands, even though MCG is the Hawks home ground! Geelong have postured if though they are a non VIc team!

I'm open to GWS playing their home finals at the SCG, particulalry the PF. Can understand our club reservation against this notion (if that is the case). Likewise if GWS are scheduled to play us in their home final, but reminding them we were forced to play our home final against them at Stadium Australia in 2016.

In summary, the AFL must be consistent across the board when it it comes to home finals and not fit for purpose when it suits.
