For the records I thought Sheldrick did some nice things - MAYBE he is starting to learn the game better.Comment

It was imperfect, but still good. To show some resilience after last week’s capitulation will be pleasing for Coxy, given we’re still a team held together with sticky tape. Thought it was also one of his better coaching performances so far with a few of his moves - like just telling Hamling and whoever else to harass the living crap out of Taylor and Buckley. (He should send them round to do a number on the umpires tonight as payback for the 27-9 free kick count.)
Chad gets all the plaudits and so he should but some of the defenders were superb. Wicks gets another gold star, Rampe obliterated Toby Greene and McCartin was back to his best down back.
Loved JJ too and with him rotating out of the on ball division, McInerney had to step up. I know he had a few brain farts, but he mucked in and was second best to Chad at winning contested ball - right down to the crucial play late where he halved a contested, cleared space for Campbell, who then set up the play to Sheldrick for his goal. You want McInerney to be cleaner but he did the job he was given.
Hope Ladhams and probably Bueller are ready to go next week, as one of Hamling or Francis will be needed down back with Melican out for a stretch, and McLean looked super proppy after the game. We’re really getting thin and Cox said after the game no one bar maybe Adams would be coming off the injury list this week.

Well I'll take that. Thought we had a real crack all day - and if not for some woeful goalkicking at times, would have got a 7 or 8 goal win like our effort deserved. Really shut down their game plan - in particular reducing the effectiveness of their big talls to start the "Tsunami" - Francis and Hamling deserve a lot of praise for their efforts today.
Some really good performances across the park - Warner and Heeney, Melican (bar that bad moment that will cost him 3 or 4 I suspect), Corey Warner was very good, JJ usual reliable self and big in important moments in the last, Sheldrick had some moments, Wicks continues to rub egg in my face for doubting his potential as a defender, Rampe gave Greene another of his specially reserved baths. `
And all done within the context of the usual baffling nature of AFL umpire. Seemed we just touched the ball and it was HTB, whereas they could do whatever they wanted for an hour and it would be a ball up. As for that Heeney call - I do wonder what he said, but it was deserving of it for what would surely be in the top 10 of terrible calls come the end of the season.
We really need to build on this and make a good run into the bye. Yes we are down a lot of troops - but if we could turn at 6-7 or even 7-6, and get some bodies back, we can make a decent run into the second half of the season. There were some real signs, especially early, that our best footy, despite being down on troops, is still there. We have to muddle through, get some wins (probably ugly wins), and go from there. Not all is lost - but we need to back it up next week against the Bombers."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

What a relief. We didn't have a free kick in the 2nd half. They had 4, so the umps put away the whistle. I was again frustrated by Roberts, Ollie and JMac not moving the ball on when well clear. Twice Roberts got marks on the wings miles clear of an opponent but simply stood there like a stale bottle of beer. JMac again stands there and chips sideways. Please don't let Roberts kick out. Otherwise we finally got a 4 quarter effort.
When will Grundy get a fair go from the umpires? He gets front position at throw ins and his opponent invariably put his arms around so he can't lift his arms for a tap out. He is getting more frustrated by these non decisions. That block against him at a centre bounce said it all. Even the commentators said it was a garbage free.Comment

That felt like an old-school mid-2000s game. Scrappy, highly-contested, low-scoring. I enjoyed it.
They seem to be trying a few forward options to complement/make up for Papley and the talls. Hamling looked to be developing a bit of full-forward mongrel as the game went on. I enjoyed that too.
Great games from Jordon (my medal pick) and Heeney, and all the defenders. Unfortunate for Melican.
Good day out at the SCG. I feel quite optimistic for next week.Comment

AFL website, "things we learned" only mentions Sydney as the team GWS played, not a thing about how we played👍 1Comment

This was a team contribution- everyone did their bit. Some did a lot more of course, but there were no passengers.
I’ll eat humble pie as I was a big critic of Wicks but his game today was very good and he has found his position down back. I’m very impressed!
I thought Francis and Hamling were ok and are filling in better than I expected. This game showed that when Isaac and Chad are playing well, the whole team lifts- add Errol and Paps and excitement returns!👍 1Comment

Anyway, great to get the win today. Despite some absolutely egregious umpiring.👍 1Comment

The umpire was Mathew Nicholls, so perhaps he referred to him as the "twat in the hat"?😂 1Comment
