One of the worst offenders this year is Jake Lloyd who gets on the end of the chain coming out of defence and refuses to move the ball on quickly allowing the opposition to set up behind the ball leaving the only option to bomb it long. We certainly miss Errol’s speed and precision kicking into the forward line

It was imperfect, but still good. To show some resilience after last week’s capitulation will be pleasing for Coxy, given we’re still a team held together with sticky tape. Thought it was also one of his better coaching performances so far with a few of his moves - like just telling Hamling and whoever else to harass the living crap out of Taylor and Buckley. (He should send them round to do a number on the umpires tonight as payback for the 27-9 free kick count.)
Chad gets all the plaudits and so he should but some of the defenders were superb. Wicks gets another gold star, Rampe obliterated Toby Greene and McCartin was back to his best down back.
Loved JJ too and with him rotating out of the on ball division, McInerney had to step up. I know he had a few brain farts, but he mucked in and was second best to Chad at winning contested ball - right down to the crucial play late where he halved a contested, cleared space for Campbell, who then set up the play to Sheldrick for his goal. You want McInerney to be cleaner but he did the job he was given.
Hope Ladhams and probably Bueller are ready to go next week, as one of Hamling or Francis will be needed down back with Melican out for a stretch, and McLean looked super proppy after the game. We’re really getting thin and Cox said after the game no one bar maybe Adams would be coming off the injury list this week.

Swans considering challenging Melican's ban.
They could argue it was unintentional because he was trying to knock the ball away and couldn't get his arm out of the way in time but I'm guessing 'careless conduct' means unintentional anyway?
It certainly was 'high contact' but maybe they could argue it wasn't 'severe impact' as Bedford passed a concussion test. He did get subbed out though with 'blurred vision due to swelling around his eye'.
Thoughts? Frankly, after the Swans failed to get Heeney's pathetic one match overturned last season, I'm thinking probably forget it.

I think Melican is an exceptionally clean player but will be amazed if we can knock a week off it.Comment

Not sure how accurate this is but my stepson says we received our last free kick with 16 minutes and 50 seconds STILL TO GO in the third quarter. What amazing self discipline from every GWS player to not transgress AT ALL for virtually all of the second half!!

Matched only by the extraordinary discipline shown by the Bulldog players in the 2016 Grand Final. Not a single free kick for almost three quarters.My opinion is objective truth in its purest formComment

Zero chance he gets off. I’m certain it wasn’t intentional but as you say that’s what the careless grading is for. And Bedford still did have to sit out the game and is in doubt for next week so blurred vision/busted nose/concussion - take your pick.

Umpiring was abysmal- a repeat of the 2016 fiasco which now seriously begs the question: is there an agenda at play?Comment

I thought there was an agenda at play while we had Buddy, ie: the Mike Fitzpatrick effect.....but it appears to live on to this day. I can't work out why they appear to hate us so much.Comment

AFL Tables records the free kicks for each club.
2025 totals for Sydney. For=162, Against=166 (97.6%) ranked 11th out of 18.
Sydney has "won" the free kick count in five games out of eight.
* Hawthorn (H) 21-23 (-2)
* Brisbane (H) 31-28 (+3)
* Fremantle (A) 18-15 (+3)
* North Melbourne (A) 21-15 (+6)
* Collingwood (A) 11-17 (-6)
* Port Adelaide (H) 28-20 (+8)
* Gold Coast (A) 23-21 (+2)
* GWS Giants (H) 9-27 (-18)
This shows a clear aberration in the GWS Giants game.
We could complain about the massive differential in the GWS game, but that's just an aberration from one week. We should be looking at trends over the season as a whole. The team with the most lopsided free kick count this year is Hawthorn, by a long way. For=184 (most), Against=125 (fewest), percentage=147.20 (first by a BIG margin), "won" the free kick count in every game so far this year. Hawthorn's really getting carried by the umpires this year.
Hawthorn's free kick counts:
* Sydney (A) 23-21 (+2)
* Essendon (H) 23-17 (+6)
* Carlton (A) 29-24 (+5)
* GWS Giants (H) 17-16 (+1)
* Port Adelaide (A) 21-12 (+9)
* Geelong (A) 24-15 (+9)
* West Coast (H) 24-11 (+13)
* Richmond (H) 23-10 (+13)
Hawthorn's last four games: For=92, Against=48, percentage 191.7. In this time, Hawthorn has received almost two free kicks for every one conceded."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi final👍 1Comment

Watched Buller on the weekend and definitely thought he was up to it. Took a great grab in the 2nd quarter, though his goal kicking needs some work.Comment
-
I thought he was doing well when he was running around as a backup ruck, but that Leek Aleer largely had the better of him when playing forward. Though of course, he wasn't getting very good service.Comment

The free kicks in the GWS Giants game were an aberration. Sydney is ranked somewhere in the middle for free kick differentials this year.
