Swans chat Team Selection: Round 11 v Melbourne

OUT: Armatey, McInerney (isusp), Francis (conc) and Florent
IN: Mills, Adams, Mclean and Buller.

3 forced changes. The 3 IN's are obvious pending Mills has pulled up ok from the VFL.

My extra change is for Florent to regain form in the VFL after starting as Sub, with Buller teaming up.with McLean as the tall targets up forward. Co Warner as Sub.

Most likely they will only go with the 3 forced changes.

Agree that Ladhams helps Grundy not to run himself into the ground. He'll be more needed v Gawn at the MCG this week.

Hamling down back as the 2nd tall to assist McCartin.

I can’t imagine any universe where having McLean, Buller and Ladhams in the same team (as well as Grundy) could be a winning strategy.

Cox must be pretty pissed off with Amartey right now. It was such a dumb thing for him to do. I think Melican was a little unlucky. Possibly McInerney too (both times). But I expect a no-exceptions “don’t bump” rule will be drummed into the team.

Read in the VFL thread Buller has looked more lively when he plays as 2nd ruck / key forward. So he's also a possible 2nd ruck option instead of Ladhams, if they think playing 4 big guys is too top heavy, thoughthat is highly unlikely I must admit.

Would like to see Buller get a run, particularly with both Armatey & Francis out.

Yeah, extremely frustrating for Armatey to get rubbed out for 3 weeks after just returning from 4 weeks missing through injury. He did straighten us up a bit with our forward entries.

Definitely a terrible time for Amartey to be suspended.

I personally hope the changes are:

OUT: Amartey (susp), McInerney (susp), Francis (concussion protocols)
        IN: Mills, Adams, McLean

I'd swing Hamling back and also play Mills in the backline till we get Melican and/or Francis back. Watched Mills in the ressies last week and he still seemed to have those intercept marks in him. I'd also be tempted to play Adams as the sub, but personally Florent's probably best for the role given his agility (and how crap he's been this year).

In good news, Robbie Fox (my fave swan) should be a test for this week. But I'd imagine they'd bring him back thru the ressies.

Could see Ollie playing and Bice/Corey the sub

A few times Bice missed the first option and went the lower percentage option, prefer to see him up the ground anyway.

Corey similarly made the simple hard by continuously turning into Traffic

Agree with those team changes, although I think Mills has to be a fulltime midfielder, his two best seasons were 2021 (av 27.5 disp, 18 Brownlow votes) and 2022 (av 24.4 disp, 21 Brownlow votes, all aus) as a fulltime mid. When fully fit I think he is the best two-way mid in the comp and it was a mistake to ever move him out of the center onto the wing and to hb over the last couple of years. I think having him in there with Heeney/Warner and one of Rowy/JJ/Juzzy/Gus/Adams will be our best midfield mix.

I think having Amarety and JMac will tip the game well and truly in Melbourne's Favour, I wont pretend to know what the swans are going to do at the selection table but if I am being honest, I would like to see Buller get the next few weeks to make a case to be offered a new contract or delisted.

Ill discipline is going to cost us games and I am sure everyone is pissed off about it.

Out - Dumb Amartey, Stupid Mcinerney, Unlucky Francis, Corey Warner
In - Lucky McLean, Taylor Adams, Callum Mills, poor Paton/Hanily/Bowman

even though Corey Warner would be stiff to go out, I think there are areas of the game he needs to get better at - poor decision making, and gives away too many free kicks. He reminds me of Dylan Stephens - just doesn’t have it in him.

i think Florent should play back if we get Hanily in.
Mills should not play the entire game, he should come off the bench. Or s Mills should play forward.

We cannot have Taylor Adams, Sheldrick, Mills through the midfield at the same time, that would be an absolute killer in terms of speed. We cut down the speed and the speed of our movement of ball against Melbourne, I am sure Steven May and the other defenders will eat us for breakfast with our very poor front line. Maybe play Hayward in the goal square or even Mills.

Hamling certainly goes back this week.

I agree with everyone who says Mills is best in the midfield. I was only proposing him in the backline as a necessary evil for the few weeks melican and Francis are out. I think his intercept marking and read of the play could help our undersized backline and also help him be eased back into the physicality of the AFL. It’s also a nod to how slow a Sheldrick, Rowbottom, Adams and Mills midfield would be with 2+ of those guys in there at once.

I do suspect Cox will play Adams as a forward

Sheldrick needs more time on ground, Fox Footy the other day saying he was still in the 60s%

Put Mills in that % and Sheldrick upto 80

Daniel Haynes seem to think that we are doing a lot right with our defensive and contest work over the last 6 weeks. We are number 1 ground get team, Number 3 most difficult to score when the ball is in our defensive 50 and offensively we aren't as good but with Chad and Heeney and Blakey playing with some freedom, maybe we are finding our mojo in the last 6 weeks.
This is even more frustrating now to think about it , that Mciinerney and Amartey were being stupid when they did what they did.
I hope it is a big learning point for the team.

Bice looks like he has come off his highs. He needs to focus on the defensive stuff and try and break the lines by his kicks Or running as Blakey is being targeted by the opposition and Bice needs to step into that role.

                          Squad selection for Sunday's game.
In: Adams, Bowman, McLean, Mills, Mitchell, Paton.
Out: Amartey (suspension), Francis (concussion), McInerney (suspension).

                          TEAM: Squad named, Mills returns

                            Here’s the team.

My guess is Adams for sub, with Mitchell, Paton and Bowman to miss.

The Sydney Swans have made three changes ahead of their clash with Narrm at the MCG on Sunday.

We're really scraping the bottom of the barrel when the players on the extended bench include one that I suspect Cox would rather never play again at senior level (Paton), one who missed last week's VFL game through sickness (Mitchell) and one who is nowhere near ready for senior footy, despite a few VFL "moments".

And that's even with two experienced players returning from long injury lay-offs. Imagine if they weren't available!

I'm not surprised to see McLean named ahead of Buller, but I thought Buller was marginally better performed in the VFL last week. He seemed to have more licence to wander up the ground to provide a target, and that was where he (Buller) provided the most value. In contrast, McLean (as a forward) was mostly stuck in the 50m arc. When Buller was in the true forward line, he was no more effective or threatening than McLean. I guess McLean is a safer bet, in the sense he has played some good AFL footy in games of old, but I think this could also be interpreted as the club having already put a line through Buller (other than in an absolute emergency).
