    The Uber flood

Richmond used this to great effect with little impact on Saturday.

LRT spent many a lonely time standing around the centre circle all by himself.

A couple of times they chipped the ball around until they found a mark within range. Sometimes they banged it in to Baz or ROK.

Why don't the players just all exit the F50 leaving only the key forwards.

If their opponents follow that is good, coz that will drag them out of the F50 and make room for some decent leads.

If their opponents don't follow, just need to get it too someone who can bang it long from outside 50m.

Back in 97/98 (IIRC) the dogs took on the flood by running the ball in close enough to have a shot with great success.

Why can't we start employing some counter measures against the uber flood?

I believe you are mistaken. Sydney are the only team that floods. All other teams get numbers behind the ball.

I think we work it pretty well to get an open man I50 against the flood. However, having said that, Richmond's defence was hardly enormously difficult to beat on Saturday.

I've said for a long time we need a couple of flood busters and we need to create some set plays to enable them to get free at about the 50m mark.

Players like Davis and Malceski would be suitable.

Teammates could set picks to free them up, like basketball.

Our game plan of creating space inside 50 and spot up a player on a short lead works best anyway.
Looking out for good omens which can bring the Swans the 2007 premiership

We have Craig Bolton, Kennelly, Dempster, Schneider, Williams (at least) all capable of kicking goals on the run from outside 50.

We have Davis and Ablett capable of kicking them off one step from the 50m mark or from a set shot up to as far as 60m out (albeit Ablett's accuracy isn't quite up to Davis').

In addition to Davis and Ablett, Hall, Schneider and O'Keefe can regularly get the distance from a 50m set shot. Wouldn't be surprised if Malceski and Dempster could too but this is yet to be seen. We saw McVeigh do it too against Brisbane, though wouldn't like to hazard a guess if this was a one-off.

The game plan is clearly to try to spot up a lead inside 50m but I, too, would love to see them mix it up a bit and try more long goals. It would put a bit of doubt in the opposition's mind, and maybe get them to think again about crowding out Hall and O'Loughlin closer to goal.

Port too used to do this with the likes of Dew et al bombing it long.

We were able to get away with it this week given the Richmond's midget backline - that must have been close to a record for the number of marks I50? But I like the idea of being prepared to bomb it long & the efforts of McV, Ablett & Dempster vs the Lions gives further credence to the idea.

Yes, running goals are an option. Teams like Port and Collingwood do it a reasonable amount.

However, I was mainly thinking of the set shot from 50m, and he accuracy of O'Keefe, Schneider and Ablett would be a concern IMO.

Did you notice how Ablett was making himself available to MOL when he took a mark beyond 45 metres. He passed off to him effectively twice for 1 goal 1 behind against the Tiggers.

He got it once, and the next time he interfered with Davis (or vice versa) as neither got the ball.

When he was looking for options I was yelling. "Have a ping!". My mates glanced sideways at me and I suggested that Jazzy was a very long straight kick from a set shot based on the warm -up shots the boys take.
