Rumours about moving the venue for next weeks game- against Freo

There are rumours going around that they might move the game next Sunday from the SCG.

This will sound precious and entitled, but I go to the games on my own. I feel safe in the familiar environment of the SCG, I know the area, I know the people around me, I don't have to worry about security etc.

I won't go to Homebush on my own. I don't feel safe as the environment is unfamiliar and I won't be sitting with people who are familiar.

And I'm a bit angry about it, because I look forward to going to the games. I enjoy going, I paid for my membership with the understanding the seats would be at the SCG where I feel safe.

I know the players need to be safe, but surely they can just fix the turf rather than moving to another venue?

That does sound a little drastic. The problem is the dead grass. There was dead grass in two pockets at least. Maybe they had another concert?

No there hasn't been more concerts. They've just never recovered properly since the one way back early in the year. The field was in good shape prior to that.

I get the concerns over the SCG surface this season since that concert in April and how it could've been managed better, particularly that we didn't have a home game for almost a month.

But the Vic media went into meltdown this week after last Friday night, with calls for this Sunday's game to be moved with talk of law.suits if players sustain serious injuries. I was annoyed seeing Gerard Whately rolled his eyes in disabelief on AFL360 last night, when he learnt the game will still be going ahead at the SCG.

My reply is this. Injuries occur every week in the AFL, how can you DEFINITELY prove any njury was a DIRECT result of the ground surface? Players take inherint injury risks each week they run out onto the ground.

Should Buddy have sued the AFL after first ever game ever on Optus Stadium, when he ended up missing most of the season due to foot injury as a result of the hard surface? No outcries then on the ground surface (Buddy bagged 8 goals!)

Just wonder if this was the MCG, the same media would be calling for all its games to be moved?

I wouldn't take it as an attack on the Swans, as it's not. It's not our ground and the AFL stupidly signed off on the condition of that ground last week.

The surface is garbage. Apparently, Port players complained about it after round six. Toby Greene revealed yesterday that after the captain's run the day before GWS played us, he decided to wear metal studs (which are illegal these days).

And to answer your question, if Bailey Williams ankle or knee had gone a fraction further out of place last week, he was almost certainly facing a long-term injury and should have sued the crap out of the venue and the AFL. There was one involved Blakey that got less attention, but he was incredibly fortunate. If that had happened, we'd all rightly be screaming about it.

It's a joke that the AFL and Venues NSW have let it get to this. And the prospect of something that's been a disaster for three months will be fixed in nine days is zero.

The problem is the lack of protection of the playing surface when the SCG hosted a concert in April. The current working method is to set up a load of equipment on the playing surface that is not really able to bear the load, then patch it up later. This is not working because the patch up could take weeks to restore the surface to a satisfactory condition.

This needs to change. Protection of the playing surface should be the first consideration, not an afterthought.

Metal studs have been banned since the 90's. I was involved with junior footy back then and the studs were akin to nails and very dangerous. Before a game the umpires came into the rooms and ran their hands over the studs on players' boots to ensure they didn't have nails protruding or incorrect studs. Toby Greene should be fined heavily. Imagine the damage he would have done when he did the karate kick to the face of a player. Frankly I don't understand that metal studs were even in possession of a player or club.
