    Whither AFL?

It's Round 7 & there are 6 teams that realistically can't make the finals. There are two other teams that every Melbourne pundit had pencilled in for the GF who can't make the 8 and there are (at least) four other teams in the top 8 who you'd question their ability to have a huge impact in September (Pies, hawks, Dogs & Freo).

Other than the two Saturday night games, Round 8 is a damp squib - and the crowds for Round 7 were really pretty awful.

Is it time for the AFL to worry? They must be thanking their various gods that the Pies have come good at least.

    It's all about the marketing.

In a couple of weeks there'll be a bit of a blitz. Semi's hype. Support your team rah rah rah.

Round 7 had some crap games, along with it being Mothers Day... thats why the crowds were down.. Like they are every year for that weekend!

Yeah, so settle down Giant. Saints and Cats might come good and be dangerous. Port and Brisbane have the talent to threaten each weekend. And on 30 September, we can make it back to back - so who gives a @@@@.

36,400 wasn't too bad for the Swans game.

I kinda give a crap coz I enjoy watching footy - and this weekend 6 out of 8 games just suggest absolute hidings or yawnfests. And if 6 teams are out of the race already then that's only get worse and worse.

Everyone's jumping on the Mother Day excuse for the piss-poor sunday crowds - I suspect there is something deeper at play here.

Or perhaps it is the correct reason? Considering that the crowds for that corresponding weekend have been down for the past few years?

Maybe, tho it was down a further 60K this year. We'll see but Round 9 looks like another dud at this stage too.

Maybe you should have done my footy tipping if you know who's going to win all the games next week.

Yep it was drizzling all day...not that that matters at the "Dome" though.

How is that different to any other weekend in Melbourne from May throught to August?

Jokes aside, crowds tend to fluctuate throughout every season IMHO.

Every club has a certain element of 'fairweather fans', whose attendance depends on form as well as weather!

I for one would never miss a game as a result of crap (or potentially crap) weather. But perhaps 3 out of 10 other members at work would. I guess it comes down to personal preference. Maybe I'm just tight - having paid for my membership I want to get full value from it regardless!

It's not a question of knowing who was going to win - Richmond demonstrated the upset can still happen. It's more a case of not really caring too much - I wasn't sure who would win b/n Port & Lions, but I did know I didn't have any interest in watching this game.

However, it's interesting that the only upset came from a game plan that involved ensuring there was only 20 mins of competitive footy played in the game.

On the plus side, I thought the Swans/Doggies game was the best (quality, not result) I've seen at the SCG for ages.
