Up 21-7 at quarter time. Generally outpressuring the Suns and allowing them very little space with ball in hand. Goals to Hardy, Price and Griffiths. All from being hit on the lead in the forward 50.

Increased our lead to 43-14, in another quarter where our pressure was better than theirs. Goals to Guy Jenkin, Hardy and probably Pignatelli.Comment

Running away with it now 70-17. Our taller defenders have been impressive so far: Norris, Beavis and, I think, Morahan (playing in 35 instead of the listed 25). They're generally beating their opponents in the air, and then winning the contested possessions if the ball goes to ground.
I didn't see who kicked the first goal, but the others went to Epis, Pignatelli and Delaney-Fielding.Comment

Ended up a convincing 109-29 win. We had strong contributors right across the field.
To continue on from the previously mentioned taller defenders. One tall who may attract the interest of recruiters is Medved. He played mainly as a half back flanker today, and possibly didn't have a huge amount of possessions, but he is 193cm, very quick and is a pretty good kick. I don't recall seeing him before this season, so he could be a recent convert who will improve as the season progresses.
One person who did get plenty of it was Will Jenkin. Instead of playing on opposite wings, it now seems that Will largely roams around half back, while Guy largely roams around half forward. It seems that we do want it in Will's hands when rebounding and he often uses it well. He's also pretty good at harassing opposing forwards. Guy had a pretty good game up forward with a couple of goals and plenty of useful possessions, but I think he had more behinds than goals and possibly missed more targets than he hit. So, in this round of Jenkin v Jenkin, Will was probably the winner.
Plenty of others played well in the forward line. Taller players Delaney-Fielding, Griffiths and Hardy all had solid contributions, but with 4 goals, Pignatelli was probably our best. At 191cm, he possibly hasn't quite got the height to get recruiters looking for a KPF excited, but he takes a strong contested mark and is a good set shot. Possibly the best prospect is underager, Hardy. Already 194cm and athletic, he could be very hard to stop, if he fills out a bit and adds a few more centimetres. I'm still liking Luke as a small forward, although his best moments were some classy involvements on the wing. Almost every one his possessions seems to work to our advantage.
Mok also showed plenty of class on the wing. Still an underager, he could develop into a very effective ball user in his draft year. We also had some strong contributions around the midfield contests. Blackwell-Smith, Meyrick, Meaney and Price all played well, without really producing the sort of game that says, "draft me!" Perhaps the captain, Price, was the best of that bunch? His game was certainly topped off, when he broke from a centre contest and tried to kick long to the advantage of the forwards. Instead, the ball evaded them, took a sharp left hand turn on the behind line and went through for a goal.
As well as individual performances, our harassment of the opposition was good all day, while I suspect that we were also better at running into space and providing options. So, a pretty enjoyable game all round.👍 1Comment

Ta.
Just looking at the stats on the AFL site, they have Will and Guy kicking a goal each. So assuming that they're right, I gave a goal to Guy that should have went to Will. Also, they had Pignatelli kicking 3 instead of 4.
And I probably should have mentioned Smith, as it looks like he got more possessions than I noticed. He might also be a recent convert, so he could develop as the season progresses.Comment

The team for the game against the Lions on Sunday. First appearance this year for Marshall-Orr: a forward who looked promising in last year's u16 championship.

Are there any insights on McGroder's playing schedule this next few months? You'd certainly want to see some exposed form from him.Comment

Not sure. I think he's currently competing in the Junior Athletics Championship, but I've no idea whether he'll be attending any other meets.Comment

In front 20-12 at quarter time, despite Brisbane having a territorial advantage, to the extent that defenders, Morahan and Beavis, were possibly our best players. Will Jenkin starting to get plenty of it.
At the other end, Guy got a goal after a free in the marking contest. Other goals were a nice bit of crumbing by Epis and a snap under pressure from about 40m by Meaney.Comment

Now in front 40-39. Looked to be running away with it, until a free in the goal square and then a mystery 50 swung the momentum.
At least one goal to Marshall-Orr. He may have got another one, but I wasn't quite sure if it was him or Price, flashing through the contest and goaling from around 50. He certainly set up another one for Griffiths, with some strong contested work. He seems to have grown a bit since playing in the U16 championship.Comment

Strong quarter to lead 73-45. Once again, defenders Beavis and Morahan snuffed out pretty well everything that came their way. While Medved did some handy rebounding.
Goals to Hardy, Griffiths, Chambers, Coughlin and Pignatelli: who finished off a full field rebound. We seem to be generally trying to play run and gun. Sometimes it works very well, sometimes it doesn't.
It'll be interesting to see if ruckman Clifton returns in the final quarter, after it looked like he suffered a severe cramp about halfway through the term.Comment

Turned into quite a tense final quarter, after Brisbane kicked the first three goals. Their momentum was halted to a certain extent, when Pignatelli took a strong contested mark and then converted the set shot. Brisbane then got a bit of momentum back, when a dubious free was paid against Beavis about five metres out, but we managed to hold on 80-72. Don't know what the free kick count was, but I suspect that it strongly favoured the home team.
Beavis was very good in defence, as was Morahan. Will Jenkin constantly provided an outlet and was close to our best. Medved seems increasingly keen to take off on the rebound, and generally does it pretty well, although he could improve his kicking efficiency. As a whole, the team seems willing to take risks moving the ball quickly out of defence. We don't quite have the skills for that to succeed the majority of the time, but I do agree with the tactic, and it's enjoyable when the ball does go the length of the field.
In the midfield, Clifton did manage to come back in the final quarter and made a few telling contributions. The midfield battle seemed to ebb and flow, with Brisbane perhaps being on top for longer. Price, Meaney and Meyrick were all pretty good, with Price possibly having the most potential. He seems hard at it and accelerates nicely out of traffic. While Smith strongly hinted that he has a league or union background, by smashing a Brisbane mid with a driving tackle. He also had a few useful involvements in defence. I also quite like the skills of outside mid, Mok, when he gets the ball.
Our goalkicking was an even spread. Two to Griffiths, Pignatelli, and possibly Marshall-Orr, since I wasn't sure if it was him or Price who kicked one of them. Then there were singles to Epis, Meaney, Guy Jenkin, Hardy, Chambers and Coughlin.
All up, quite an enjoyable game, with pretty much everyone making a decent contribution.Comment
