Team List Team Selection: R5 v Gold Coast @ Norwood

    In: Rosas Jr
    Out: Sheldrick (suspension)

    Emergencies: Maclean, Dattoli, Snell

Snell to be one of the travelling emergencies in case Melican doesn't come up, even hough he wasn't mentioned in the club's Injury Report.

Papley and Rosas to perhaps share more midfield time to cover Sheldrick. Hard pressed to make further changes after such a huge win

Dattoli and Maclean appear to be pressing for selection going by their recent VFL form.

The team as selected (AFL website):
    In: J.Hamling, M.Rosas
    Out: L.Melican (omitted), A.Sheldrick (suspension)

Melican out as "omitted" is definitely a surprise. Perhaps he's got a minor injury and he's been managed somehow?

Definitely a surprise. Feels as if a message is being sent. If it was a niggle surely he’d be out “injured” rather than “omitted”?
My opinion is objective truth in its purest form

Will be fascinated to see the usual weekly video the Swans drop after selection, and whether it's a form thing, or a niggle thing (which would make the classification of omitted interesting).

If it's the latter, no problem with Hamling. He's been solid when actually played down back, and more of a true tall to match a very tall forward line.

Would personally love both Edwards and Snell to get a game soon, but Edwards hasn't had a good run yet and Snell seems more likely as a third defender.

Melican is interesting, hasn’t done much wrong, ( precautionary surely ) Hamling has been our best defender in the 2s so far this year. Wouldn’t mind seeing Edwards or Snell shortly

Hamling is not a long term solution. Agree if Melican has a niggle say i,t doe not deserve to be dropped there are others that do. And why have both Ladhams and hayden as emergensies, Also suggest either Snell who played as well as Hamling last week and Edwardes (who may not yet be match fit) should have replaced Melican

Melican being omitted is an odd one.
I think for Snell and/or Edwards to debut we would rather them be playing on the 3rd tall as opposed to one of the key position players, which is what they would be up against had either of them replaced Melican.
Would also like to see a good few week block of strong reserves form before they are promoted.

The AFL website has posted a discussion on reasons for Melican's omissions here: Team whispers: Why Swan was axed, new Roo follows dad's footsteps. To summarise, the VFL has a bye this week, so Melican's been given a chance to rest and overcome a "back issue". Form also played a role. I suspect it's both. It's hard to play well when one is carrying a niggling injury.

They must be watching something else as there is daylight between Melican and the next best

Got to play these "kids" ahead of Hamling too, if not now when ? They would be playing on 20yr olds at Gold Coast

AFL website has posted some comments by the Swans and Suns on the Norwood ground here: Swans, Suns ready for hot contest on narrow Norwood Oval.

Norwood Oval is a narrow ground (110 metres), but it is only slightly narrower than Geelong's Kardinia Park (115 metres). Geelong also has a game at Norwood Oval against West Coast.

Altough Melican hasn’t done much wrong, he hasn’t offered much either and I think Hamiling has earned a reprieve, BUT like you I would love to see Edwards and Snell get a chance before they are delisted in the coming years. IF Snell keeps playing how is and Rampes output keeps dropping off id love to see him slot into his spot.
