    Goals from midfield

The most pleasing aspect of Saturday night for me was the goals we are scoring from our midfield.

In the past I feel this has been a weakness of Swans teams.

On Saturday Fosdike, Kirk, Goodes and McVeigh all scored goals.

If we continue to get 4 or 5 goals every week from our midfield then we'll keep kicking winning scores.

With Willo possibly in his last season and not kicking as many as he used to, its great to see players like Ablett and McVeigh rstepping up to kick a few.

Both are looking like decent chances from outside 50 as well.

      Goals from the Midfield

I have found it pleasing that an area that needed improvement from 2005 has actually occurred so far this season - our midfielders are actually kicking goals.

In the 26 games Sydney played in 2005 a total of 87 goals were kicked by players that played predominantly through the midfield/wing - including Adam Goodes with 23 goals.

In the 8 games so far this season the "midfield" has kicked 49 goals. This total includes Jude Bolton (6 goals) and Jarrad McVeigh (8 goals) who have already doubled their 2005 individual goal tallies and Nick Malceski who has show pretty good goal sense, so far kicking 5.

Good signs for a very credible flag defence.

      Cheers

How uncanny. Hammo posted this thread while I was checking the spelling on my thread at the exact same time.

        can they be merged?

        Cheers

McVeigh is playing more as a forward than midfielder this year.

(I did write more but the stupid site wouldn't let me post and I lost it all).

Of course it's easier to kick goals when most of our midfield are in the forward line to match up to the high tide of Dogs.

I have had a touch of that today myself.

Certainly looks like Roosey's game-plan was more aggressive than usual on the weekend, and hence why we moved some numbers forward from the midfield and it looked like our midfield was scoring a touch more (what is a midfield these days, really?).

ROK's move down half-back to take advantage of height was a master stroke I reckon, and slowed the Dogs down a bit. But he did take a couple of his standard marks later on in the game..

That happened to me twice yesterday and once you've written it, not time to re-write it.

Anyhoo, I was just commenting to a mate yesterday that it's a great barometer for the team when 3 midfielders end the year on around 20 goals a year each.

If 3 of these guys kick 20 odd for 2006, then ink us in for a top 4 spot.

                    Ablett yes but McVeigh?? WTF??

The guy is an OK kick over 40m, anything further would be doubtful.

McVeigh kicked a ripper from an outside 50 set shot just two weeks ago.

..and i thought he looked fairly comfortable in slotting it too. I don't think it will be the last Goal from O50 we see from him. and hopefully we'll get a few.

One kick that connected nicely proves nothing.

Are you looking for incontrovertible proof of something?

The bloke looks to me like he may be able to work the odd goal from O50, and thank god for that as a possible scoring option because weve been lacking in that dept. IMHO

many midfielders can kick goals on the run from outside 50, but would struggle to slot one through if there was a man on the mark.

Not sure which you are all referring to, but I think Davis and Ablett are the only ones who can regularly get the distance with ease from outside 50.
