    Prophecy - In hindsight

This was posted a couple of years ago - seems as though journos can be wrong.

Karen Collins of afl.com.au article says of Stu on 9/9/2003:

?Enormous courage?.proving an inspired choice???.you wouldn?t find a better bloke?..an ideal choice as captain??his leadership has given the club stability?.a tough work ethic?..?I have had??..influence over them (the players)???.works hard at training?..he is very tough?..!!!!!!He doesn?t have an(sic) array of skills??..but he has great skills and what he does he does well. Is highly respected among the player group?.earning admiration and respect?he inspires the players for (sic) his leadership? always switched on so players look up to him because of the type of person he is?.

Jessica (Mother Goose) Halloran of the SMH says of Stu on 6/9/2003 in the SMH:

Brett Kirk was rescued by Stuart Maxfield ?.Maxfield saw in Kirk a strong work ethic and loyalty - qualities that run deep in the Swan?s captain??is outspoken?..more intense than Kelly?.trains so hard?..captains so fiercely?..renowned for his role in fostering younger players?.Roos says ?.skipper has never failed him?..he?s a very good mentor?. A great role model?..threw himself into the captaincy?.very easy going?.intense? uncomplicated? a very good family man?...An amazingly hard worker?talented, tough and hardworking footballer?..he embodies the determined and dedicated ethic of the team.??something wonderful about him. ?an outstanding Captain?

With apologies to Karen and Jessy for any mistakes.

So there we have it and who am I to disagree with this assessment by two highly respected scribes and the football luminaries they sought out for quotes.

Stu Maxfield is quite obviously a wonderful, fierce, renowned, amazingly hard working, intense but then again uncomplicated, easygoing yet determined, dedicated loyal man with a strong work ethic. He is always switched on, a man who players look up to, maybe he doesn?t have an array of skills and yet (strangely) has great skills. He is highly respected and was an ideal choice indeed an inspired choice as captain ? a single individual who has singlehandedly stabilised the Sydney Swans and who is a good family man.

I was in total awe ? Had I found myself in the presence of greatness - Was I Saul on the road to Damascus ? Had I been blinded by the aura of someone special - It suddenly dawned on me:

??Is Who the Messiah - will he again run faster than a speeding bullet, feed the masses, heal the sick, walk on water, jump over tall buildings in a single bound, rip telephone books in half, love sinners, throw the moneylenders out of the Temple and parade around in a white garment surrounded by his disciples!?

Nope, fortunately, I remembered a scene from that irreverent little film ? The Life of Brian?

Picture the rabble outside Brian?s hovel screaming:

    ?Brian is the MESSIAH?

Picture Brian?s Mum ( a particularly ugly man in drag) coming out and screaming back at them:

    He?s not the Messiah ? He?s a very naughty boy ? now **** off!!!

Stu, in my opinion, is quite dumb just about as dumb as I consider Sam Newman was to walk around in a pink tutu and ballet pumps trying to look inconspicuous in the middle of the MCG. Mind you Sam has a sense of humour and doesn?t take himself all that seriously.

Swans will knock Brisbane off and then do over the chokers Port in the Grand Final and the AFL will be smiling and Stu will rise into heaven on a white towell.

Jackson and Demetriou will be laughing all the way to the Bank.
