    Kick-ins

For the first time this year we actually took advantage of the new rule on the odd occasion! Very pleasing to see, especially considering we basically had 21 for the entire game, it's almost counter-intuitive that you would choose last night to up the tempo from the kick-ins.

Really pleasing to see the first goal come from the coast-to-coast effort through Richards.

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Hawthorn fell for the huddle every time. It was just too easy.

We have been very good at this the last few weeks. This is the rule the scribes said would send us to oblivion.

I loved the kick in that saw Richards lead out first, the kick was put way out in front of him and Richards just left his man behind! I think he was about half way down the field when he took possession.

And the next kick went over Davis' head to his advantage... Goal!

yeah its great to see us do this - definitely better than the short chip to the pocket, then long kick down the wing followed by a boundary throw in

I sat in the MCC area on the wing and there always seemed to be a free player standing in front of me waiting for the kick in.

Gee, there are some ordinary Victorian sides running around in this competition.

Hawks have some good players, and a fair bit of potential... but when you've been playing man-on-man against the cluster, and the opposition has not once had the slightest problem clearing the zone on the kick-in, wouldn't you consider changing tactics at some point in the long night?

Sydney's best kick-ins generally didn't result from us taking advantage of the new rule. For the most part, we took our time getting the huddle set.

did you see in the 3rd quarter when goodes dropped the ball in the goal square?

tadgh had to run in from the 50 metre line and for a few seconds there i thought that the ump would call play on and the hawks could go pick it up and slot it through.

if the ball is just siting in the square and no one is holding it, will the same time limit occur?

I saw that. I assume the time starts from when any player picks up the ball.

I beleive so. As soon as Tadhg picked it up th Ump called play on. However, the Hawks didn't pick it up, early enough to pose a problem, until he slipped over and almost cocked it up.

Under the new rule, where players can take the kick-in without waiting for a goal umpire to wave the flag, Sydney scores end-to-end goals - without the opposition touching the ball - more than any other team.

It ranked 15th in that area last season.

I wonder whether this is as much due to the fact we've dominated a handful of weak teams in recent weeks rather than anything else. And an excellent conversion rate kicking for goal will have helped. Teams like Hawthorn and Richmond had no idea how to exert pressure in the middle to stop the fast break down the corridor. I suspect it will be harder to do this when we start coming up against Adelaide and West Coast.
