    father son pick ups

the next 2 drafts could be quite plentifull should the swans get their act together

jake williams (son of greg) is elligble for us as well as carlton, he is captain of the calder cannons in the TAC Cup

next season we could get darcy daniher (son of anthony, yes he did play 100 games for us) available as well

lets hope the club can play "hardball" with carlton and essendon and get these 2 future guns to the bloods

by all reports joe daniher is just as good but is only 12 years old

my understanding it that the son (and family) chooses who he wants to play for. Is that right?

If thats the case, lets hope they dont want to play for the cellar dwellers!

Yep, its up to the player. They can even reject a father son offer and go into the draft if they want (Marc Murphy did this because he didn't want to go to Brisbane).

        I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Given that Murphy chose to go to the bottom team (with the least talented list, and therefore the longest wait to be any good, in the comp) ahead of going to Brisbane-- I think that for many Melbourne kids, given the choice, staying at home is a higher priority than going to the better team. Which isn't surprising for an 18yo boy fresh out of school.

Hopefully these boys think differently. BTW, did anybody on here actually see Smiler Dempster's old man play? How did his style (and quality) contrast with his son?

Graham Dempster was a forward, who loved to take a spectacular mark. He was average to good on his better days. I think Sean may be more talented, and he certainl;y has a better haircut than his old man.

I'm not a big one for this father-son rule. It's a real myth. Jobe Watson (Robson)... EJ Whitten's son... David Bourke. Paul Hudson. Campbell Brown. The two Ablett bros other than Gary Jr. All the Clokes and Shaws and Collingwon't. etc etc etc

Most 3rd round picks are going to be gambles anyway, so why not take a son of a ex-(great)player who you know has been brought up on a staple diet of footy, footy, and more footy.

Are you alluding to Jobe Watson not being any good? If so, are you kidding?! The kid will be a gun. Case in point: Rd 1 vs Kirky. Lloyd got the plaudits, Watson deserved them.

Bloke called Jonathon Brown in Brissy wasn't a bad father/son pickup! Nor was Gary Pert at Fitzroy before the maggots bought him.

I thought the father- son rule worked on how many games were played for each club so in this case greg williams played 2 more games for Carlton then he did for Sydney so wouldn't that mean Carlton only has the choice to pick him up?

I think this is a huge factor, plus they want to play as soon as they can, so being picked by a good side and playing three years in the ACTAFL or WAFL or QAFL is hardly appealing.

I read it that there is a minimum amount of games that have to be played by the father to qualify. In the Cloke's case they could have played for Richmond or Collingwood, the family chose the Woods. It will be the same with Williams junior.
