The problem is the older he gets the more terrible games he seems to have.

If my son was to be Benny, he would be dropped after todays effort and we played in sunny Baccus March.

8.14 to 1.7 we won by.

If you are played in the wrong position and don't play well, who's fault is it.

'OK' shouldn't be good enough though.
It should be 'when he is good, he is good' , at the very least.
'Great' or 'fantastic' would be even better.

                    That's right.

At his best he does a very good stopping performance.

However, he gives us little offensively.

I think we have enough stoppers.

                      1. I think its clear that Benny was not at his best today.

                      2. It is also clear that some fans, who tend to watch on-ball outcomes only, have different views of players than coaching staff, who get to see a lot more off-ball work via video sessions.

                      3. At the game today (and at many others), I saw in-and-under commitment from Benny that has evidently earned him a serious reputation with the playing group.

                      4. I recall similar posts last season where it was concluded that Benny couldn't play. I also recall seeing commentary from many (incl Walls and Dimitiriou) that the Bloods couldn't win the flag.

                      5. I think the above goes to show that no-one sees all of the angles, and that Roosy (and his coaching staff) sees more than most.

Conclusion: Benny contributes big-time and deserves our support!

He was terrible today, but you can't judge any one player on one game.

The problem is that when he's on song, he is never 'great', just serviceable. As I've said before, a classic blue-collar player. Never remarkable, never game-winning, keeps his opponent accountable but almost never hurts him on the rebound, always takes the safe option (even when the riskier option is in the team's interests). Etcetera.

He does some useful in-and-under stuff that may not be appreciated on TV, but he also puts in too many of what can only be called '75% efforts', in particular misguided attempts to let his opponent take the ball and corral him, when what's needed is to charge straight at the contested footy.

Schmidt, little Willo and Moore all deserve game time ahead of him; but Robert Harvey deserves a premiership medallion for all of his toils, and that ain't gonna happen, either.

I don't see the point of a 'drop Mathews' petition because so far as it's noticed at all, it's liable to produce the opposite result. The club admin/Roos' responses to unpopular or vilified players (LRT, Chambers) has consistently been to get right behind them and to brand the criticisms as unfair.

Ben, Torture and Jolls were about as skillful as 2 legged bulls at a rodeo.

Those blokes nearly caused smashed TV sets all over NSW, nearly threw my beer into my own plasma.

Anyhoo, as much as I have admired Ben over the years for his couragous efforts in and under, there are a number of young blokes who can get a start doing that "kind" of role, it's how Kirky got his start as a genuine midfield gun.

If we don't have a more skillful player with equal courage in the magoos, then what's going on down there?

When Ben kicked the ball straight into Jolls or Torture (can't remember who) it became pretty evident.

Sydney is now in GAME WINNING phase, not MATCH SAVING phase. Time for Benny to be put out to pasture. Sorry Ben!
