A good friend of mine is a speech pathologist and through his profession has mastered the skill of lip-reading. Apparently the media universally misinterpreted the so-called sledging of Nick Davis by Nathan Buckley. My mate reliably informs me that their conversation ran along the following lines.

NB: Fair dinkum, Davo. I?ve been busting my gut for years with these clowns. What do I have to do to win a premiership? I?ve won the Brownlow, even a Norm Smith Medal in a losing side. One exquisite quarter against the Cats last year, and you?ve laid the foundations for the Swans? first premiership win in 72 years. It?s just not fair mate.

ND: What can I say? I never understood why you left sunny Brisbane for Bleak City. You could have had three flags by now. I even tried to get you up here a few years back, but Ricky Barham refused to relax the interpretation of the no-@@@@heads policy. Some blokes just aren?t meant to win it mate.

          Hope that?s cleared things up.

It was delightfully ironic tho when Buckley himself dropped a sitter in almost the same spot a quarter later - an irony not shared by the Magpoe supporters around me when I roared derision in a most unstatesmanlike manner.
Correct, he didnt duck his head. I thought Buckley just misread it.

But. I think its entirely appropriate to have a go at someone if they duck their head, or do anything soft for that matter...true, people like Hird can get away with performance alone usually, but even he is prone to the odd sledge during full moons.

I also loved the neat ironic postcript featuring Buckley dropping a fairly grabbable mark - and why Davis didnt race his popcorn-chicken-little self over there to give him some ill never know... considering the result perhaps it was better left unsaid.

According to the Tele, Barry Hall called Bucks a "turtlehead" when that happened.

How funny was that? I am still laughing.

There are a lot of admirable footy qualities about NB, however his milking of that free kick in the goal square earlier this year was just about the weakest dive ever.

It made Lloydy's acting look positively Brandoesque!

Fuelled by the fact that Nick Davis left Collingwood to enjoy success at Sydney would hurt deeply with a bloke who left Brisbane to go to a club that was on the receiving end of the Brisbane dynasty. Beautiful isn't it!

                          Indeed it is.

You could even say its karma that Davis will walk away from his playing career with a premiership medal and Bucks more than likely won't. Stuff all the Copeland Medal's, Brownlow Medal's, Norm Smith Medal's, Newspaper awards and Rising Star award he has won, means jack all if you haven't got the Gold one Davis has.

Maybe for a normal person, but individual honours are probably just as highly regarded by someone as (seemingly) egotistical as Buckley.

I'm sure he regards them highly just as any player would, but at the end of the day no matter how egotistical Buckley is, its a Premiership Medal he wants and it would hurt him deep inside if at the end of such a successful personal player career he doesn't have one, while two former teammates in Nick Davis and Paul Williams have one.

He pasted up the chance of winning three in a row by moving from Brisbane to play with a "more successful club" or even rejecting Port Adelaide's offer in 1996 (when they entered the AFL and were building their list) to move back to them for the 1997 season onwards.

I'm sure he'll pride himself on the personal glory, but unless the Pies can do the business for him on the field he'll retire missing the most important piece of silverwear hanging around his neck and that would be quite sad for the player he has been, but quite fitting for the 4 chances he stood up because he wanted to play for Collingwood the "more successful club".
